have to remove tank. just a few questions . have unplugged all electrics from battery petrol ignition etc. worried as i have petrol still in tank. can this be filtered off before removel and if so how.

it,s k100rt 1987 model. also any tips on removel need to fit new radiator thereafter so also looking for tips

i do have manual but not great at understanding the explanations and pics.

Don't know what others think but I have had my tank off a few times with fuel in it and no problem. If you want to work on the tank itself, maybe you could disconnect the fuel hose where it joins the fuel rail. Put it in a container and used the starter button to pump the tank out. You will need to leave some fuel in though to make sure the pump doesn't pick up any grunge from the bottom of the tank. The fuel comes out pretty fast. I forgot to hook up the fuel hoses once and turned it over. Made a hell of a mess on the shed floor.

what i do is 1 >undo the return line and put one end of the extra pipe on there first ...doesnt have to be tightened off with a clamp ,,, 2> undo the feed line, block the outlet hole quickly with a finger and put the other end of the pipe on there ...then the hole thing is secure and no leaks any where .....it works for me

Remove the fuel pump fuse (#6), then start the engine.
To relieve fuel pressure, before disconnecting hoses.

I'd mention the the two "mounting posts" on the frame at the rear of the tank. Early models (pre '86) had the single bolt (correct me if I am wrong).
Some have metal clips on the posts to hold the tank in place, some don't; they just have the rubbers.
Obviously remove the clips if they are there.
Lift up your seat and have a look.

Actually it was him who put me onto it. Works a treat minimum fuel spilt and you can hook it back up easy as.

Great tip from Inge of how to relieve the 1-bar or so pressure in the early K-bikes' tank before removal. I've been recommended some magic aerosol fluid ( Fluid Film, distributed by Graingers world-wide) to protect mechanical and electrical interfaces. My pal George at Carcoon who's into classic vehicle protection says it's great for keeping the dreaded moisture at bay when the weather turns. In fact he markets an almost exactly similar product called CSF, so in advance of winter I'd like to treat all the various interfaces under the tank with it. I've previously managed to lift up the rear of the tank and slide it back a bit to get into the relays box, but never dared actually to lift it off the bike and away to lay it aside on something nice. Would make it easier to replace the air filter of course, and mess around with the fuel filter, pump, etc.

Further tips for tank removal, anybody please ?

When you have reached that far............

the only thing next needed to be done is to disconnect the fuel hoses and the electrical connector.........

and lift the tank off the bike.

OK Inge - many thanks once more. So that's my homework for later today when the day cools back to 25 degrees and the effects of the lunchtime bottle of tinto wear off....
