Hi Folks,
Here is an interesting article on Teflon grease for low speed lubrication which seems like a very good thing versus Teflon inside the engine as an additive which is a BAD thing.

http://www.sandsmachine.com/grease_t.htm

For anyone planning on using stainless fasteners that or Krytox would be a really worthwhile product since as most boaties know stainless steel fasteners are an absolute BUGGER for galling which is really contact friction welding and it tears the thread apart.

Hi,
So what you are saying is to use teflon based grease in stainless bolts ...
I tend to use Teflon in the diff and gearbox oils, but never in motor oils. Just form my information, what is wrong with Teflon in the engine?

I can see a can of worms opening here but I use copper grease on my stainless bolts which I think was also suggested by Ajays and not a hint of a problem so I don't have any problem recommending it.

As for Krytox I rang the company distributing it and they suggested it as a much better option than moly spline grease so we just need someone to try it..... (would have been me but like the elusive Honda grease could not get hold of some)

I remember when teflon engine additives were first introduced and from a bike point of view the discussion surrounded teflon coating on wet clutches so in theory if you were running a dry clutch it was not an issue. As for other issues I will open it to the floor and duck out of the way. Very Happy

Phil

Hi All,
Dupont who make Teflon have gone on record as saying do not use Teflon in an engine. There have been a number of actions in the US regarding this. If you must use an additive in an engine or gearbox I would personally use the Dow Corning Molyslip additives which they recommend for industrial use as well as gearboxes.

Stainless into other metals - that is usually OK if the threads are polished. Stainless into stainless - depends on the grade. 314 into 314 can pretty much weld together. We used to use a dry moly spray on the threads on stainless pressure vessels & never had to take one apart with a gas axe. I believe we used the Ambersil aerosol can. Spray it on and it just stays on forever Smile
