Hello All,

Trying to order a few more parts - I can't seem to find the name of the two red rubber O-rings that are fitted just to the side of the output shaft - can't see them until the bottom crank case is removed. Any ideas what they are called, or possibly what the part numbers are?

I`ll guess it is the O-rings for the water passages you have in mind, since they are red.

Looked in the Motobins site and a BMW site - can't seem to find them. When I pulled off the crank case (oil pan is attached to) off the engine to gain access to the output shaft two red O-rings were there. Not sure if they need to be replaced, but guessing they do. Any thoughts, Inge? Thanks for the quick reply.

Yep, those are the one's. Since they aren't oil seals wondering if I can use the same ones, or if they should be replaced?

11 11 1 460 391 O-RING - 15X2,5
11 11 1 460 392 O-RING - 27,3X2,4

Gaskets, seal rings, O-rings or whatever (especially inside the engine) should always be renewed when they are disturbed, unless they are rather new (O-rings).

Exeptions is the rubber gaskets on the engine covers.

Any bearing supply place should be able to supply them, BMW very rarely use odd sizes so they should be available. Make sure you get the Viton ones as they will stand the heat best. The black nitrile ones won't stand up under the temperatures and only last a few years.

The small one is for the oil passage.
The other one is for water.

Viton isn`t that fond of hot water (above 80 degrees celsius).

Viton is for high heat applications, the rear main seal is made from it and:!: most valve guide seals as well.

I do agree that Viton has a very good resistance against heat, but not in the combination with water.

And since one of the O-rings was to be used in a water passage.......................

Fluorocarbon, application disadvantages

On the other hand you got a whole lot different kind of special qualities within the Viton family (that also have better resistance against hot water), this is the one for standard use.................
