Left the bike ticking over while chatting and after about 10 minutes it started spluttering water from the reservoir, either the Fans are not working or the senser or relay are Kaput. any thoughts where to look first and is there an easy way to check the fans?

Hi Lou,
I once had the reservoir overflowing and the cause was simply a split in the hose from the radiator cap to the reservoir.
When the coolant expands it flows freely down the hose into the res, but as it contracts the easier route is to suck air through the split in the hose, consequently the res overflows.
Maybe your problem as well and it's easy to check and cheap to fix.

lou ...water going to the resevoir is quite normal as it reaches temperature ....but you better makesure that its full properly .....often there is air inside the system ...or not full up ......best way to check if the fan is actually able to rotate is to reach inside the right hand side fairing ....use a torch to confirm that the fan can actually turn by hand .......if it can..next would be to check the terminals at the connector to the fan (sorry lower fairing off) ...the connector is often found to be in need of cleaning ...we love "deoxit" for this type of maintenance .

Not unusal that the fan is seized, try to turn it with your finger.
Did the temp. warning light show?

If not, it`s a sensor or relay problem.

To check the sensor, remove the relay from its socket and measure the resistance between terminal E and 31.

Compare the result with the diagram temp vs. resistance in Bert`s troubleshooting guide at the portal.

After checked that the isn`t seized, you can check the fan itself and the wiring between the relay socket and the fan by bridging terminal 15 and A2 in the socket.

At a guess I would say the most likely culprit is a seized radiator cooling fan - ask me how I know.....

Thanks for the help, there was no warning light and the fans feel free... looks like the sensor is the problem but i will check the connections anyway

Check the brushes, there was one on here that was broken a while ago and I have a couple of spares and there is a busted brush on one of those.
