I have heard a noise comming from the fuel tank and at first I thought it was the fuel pump getting old (my bike has 51,000 miles) so decided to replace both the fuel pump and filter at great expense. When I fitted the nee fuel pump I was horrified to find out the noise was still there. Anyway I tracked it down to the last possible thing which was a non return valve on the return pipe (You can take it out by a 19mm spanner). I took the spring and the ball bearing out and hey-presto...no noise.

So save yourself ££££ by not paying for a fuel pump and check that first!

My question is what can I replace the non return valve with-did BMW modify this for the early models? I'm told the later tanks have a N-R-valve which is not compatible with my 1984 tank???

Yeah its a bit of a trap for the unwary that one.
The later tanks had the return line going to the top of the tank so that fuel didn't run back when the tank was removed apparently you can attach a rubber hose to the spigot inside the tank and bring it up to the top of the tank. some of the other guys that have done it will be able to give a better description on how.

And keep in mind that inside the tank you must use a submersible fuel hose
(SAE 30R10).

Another option is to fit fuel line connectors with built-in shut-off valves.

I removed the ball and spring long ago [early models] and being lazy I clamp the tube when removing the tank disconnecting at the lower point.

Another issue I had was a wrong routing of the return tubing that when the water hose got hot it almost closed the return pipe being trapped and gave off a reed high pitched note. Ran normal when cold....you can imagine my frustration until I solved it.

Thanks for the ideas-I think I'll fit an in-line valve...this is probably the easiest option. The tank has been on and off loads of times now!

How do I add a picture of my bike? I can't see how or where to do that.
