Hi,

I'm riding my first season on a BMW, i bought a used K75RT Polizei, last year, and payed the tax here in the spring 2012 (in Denmark that means 3700$ for this bike from 1993 New to BMW 177381 )
I have then ridden around 2000 km on it, and love it.
It has a great comfort, but is a bit to the warm side, here in the mid summer, but great in the early morning, and evening.

New to BMW P8210116.JPG-for-web-xlarge

my only problem is I'm rather short, and the seat is placed rather high on this model Wink
But I manage, but it is difficult to push it out from a parking spot, on my toes, any advice?

Cheer
Peter

Welcome aboard Peter lots of help available here,

There are a few vertically challenged folk here including me at 5'6, I'm know there are some more expensive options about, but i choose to cut some foam out of my seat, I'd wait a little longer and see what others suggest.

Nice bike

Hi Peter welcome to the forum
There are several places to get a 25mm shorter rear shock.Realm Engineering in UK sell RAM SHOX which I can teel you from presonal experience are very good http://www.realmengineering.com/page15.html
These will make your seat 20mm lower with very little difference to ground clearance.

welcome aboard peter ....nice looking bike ...

for the shorter folks amongst us ...might be better to practice getting the bike off the centre stand , and manouvering to higher ground whilst standing beside it ....(well thats what one of our member here used to do ..pretty much all the time )

paddling the bike off the stand with short legs is verry difficult .

Very nice bike mate. Very Happy I really like the colour scheme and the single seat

I am short - tried many thinsg and different things work for different folks but shorter rear shock and dropping front yolks to match was the only thing that worked for me.

Cheers
Dave

Hej peter, det er et normalt problem - der er ikke nogen anden billig løsning end træskostøvler.

As far as I can see we are now 3 from Dk on forum - two in Jylland and me from the devil's island. I have the same problem with my K100 RS, and need to make sure there is a downhill run from where it is parked. Backing up over even very small obstacles is near impossible.

(For the linguistically challenged, the first comment recommends wooden clog type boots with a thick sole.)

Thanks for the greetings, The bike has the original German police colour scheme, and it has only done 65000 km (arround 40000miles)

@ Agerbundsen
Yes I did see you were from Denmark, I looked around earlier today.

I normally get it of the centerstand standing next to it, and put it on the sidestand, "climb" aboard and drives of.

That is a nice looking bike, Peter! The police take good care of their vehicles, and sell them early!
I'm 6'3" tall, so I'm not the best one to advise you on how to resolve the problem with the tall seat. Actually, my problem with the seat/footpegs is always on the other end of the spectrum. scratch

Right now, I'm rather dissapointed about BMW, I just got it through repair, rather expensive, but this morning it has discharged the battery again, and after charging it it still can't start, but it looks and sounds like it just shorts the batterie.

So I don't think it will be a long relationship. I didn't buy it for tinkering, but for driving

Peter dont give up. The guys here are very helpful and they are lovely to ride.

There are a few simple problems which you will get help with. On height I am 5' 8", about 173cm and have a problem too. I always park first on side stand and then put bike on main stand. I find it easier then to take it off the mainstand while sitting on it and letting it lean very slightly left so I can 'paddle' it to wherever I want. I have to be careful where and how I park so I dont have to do that. Never park facing down a hill unless you can drive forward. My seat is very comfortable and I will not take padding out of it. Lower rear shock and lower forks is a better option as you wont use the ground clearance.

If you have a workshop manual is good. If not a Clymer on ebay would be good. Worth having and reading. This site will give you all the help you need.

Chances are you must take off the petrol tank. Your fairing looks identical to mine.

General advice; disconnect battery both terminal before doing anything. Its a wise habit.

You remove the left storage compartment, its got two screws where the lock is, They also hold the left knee pad. You have two nuts and bolts at the front of the storage box, the nuts are in behind the black centre panel and are hard enough to get at but you can do it single handed. If these are difficult change them. I replaced mine with standard gutter bolts and large washers and they are much easier to work with.

After you take off the box there is a black metal frame that should have four screws, two front and two back. This comes off too. Underneath there should be a back plastic flat panel that closes the gap between the fairing and the petrol tank, two screws. The knee pad has another screw underneath above the gear lever, this will allow the knee pad to come off. There is one more short blank panel closing the gap between the faring and the engine/air box. There are two screws and it comes off too. If these are not on your bike it will be hot to ride, they stop hot air getting back to your leg.

I have been able to remove my petrol tank without removing the right hand side components. Just be careful as the gap is small but sufficient.

You now need to remove the tank earth and fuel hoses. The fuel system MUST be depressurised. Simple option is leave the bike 24 hours with battery disconnected. If you leave it connected and turn on the ignition you will pressurise the fuel system again and be back to square one.

The hoses and earth on mine are near the front left side of the tank. The front one is comparatively short, the rear one much longer. Both on mine are fitted with worm screw clips. These will come off, carefully pull the pipes off and plug them with golf tees.

The wires to the fuel pump on mine are just forward of the right hand side cover panel, these have to be disconnected. I have 4. Depending on your routing this may have to be fed back up between the frame and the box under the seat to allow the tank to be raised.

Your petrol tank may be bolted, at the rear. If not it has two projecting lugs that sit into recesses in the frame. Check if you have clips on these. Mine should have them but didnt so it lifted straight up at the rear and can slide back and off.

You now have the electrics in sight. Lots of them.

A word of advice. Check the condition of the fuel hoses. They perish. Mine were perished and are now replaced with longer ones which allow the tank to be raised at the rear without disconnecting the fuel lines. I also relocated and lengthened the tank earth so that it is longer and instead of disconnecting from the tank I take it off the frame. I can now lift the rear, prop it and access the control box with all the relays. Any problem with a relay should be in this control box.

Under the tank you have a lot of wiring. You will also see earths bolted to the frame. It is worth undoing and cleaning all of the earths. The electrical connectors also should be checked and cleaned. Deoxit is recommended.

I dont know if your problem is in here, but its easy to get at these and is recommended. As an aside I had a similar problem at first- problem was the battery itself.

Two years ago in Budapest I got some photos of Hungarian police K75s in really good condition. I have also spoken with a few owners and not met any unhappy ones.
