Hi good people of the forum, may I please ask for a bit of help or advice. My K100 has being running fine till about three days ago when a fuse blew for what I thought was the indicators, but it also seemed to control every thing on the hadle bar swith gear. Can't start the bike on the button though will bump no problems.

If I press both turn signals I get hazards? if I press left the right lights up, if I press right the right lights up?

When I put the ignition on I get a clicking from one relay Blue one, V23073-B1001 X004 though I went to the garage this morning to check bike before going out and started on the button, 10 minutes lated when I was all in leather nothing.

Do you think in I replace this relay all should be well or should I be looking else where.

I have removed the swich gear to check for loose wire, nothing?

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks Alex

A common problem with the Mighty K. Remove the starter motor and carefully disassemble. It is full of carbon dust from the brushes and almost everything electrical is channeled through it. It might require new brushes but often not. Hose it down with brake parts or contact cleaner. There are several very detailed posts about this here in the forum.

It is not a ghost in the machine.

Thanks, one thing I have just found in an earth wire, one end is contected to the frame under the tank and the other end heads up in the direction of the handle bars but it's loose, not bolted to any thing, as I was fiddling with it the bike did turn over so I am now looking to see if it is because there is no earth going to the switch gear.

Then I'll look at the starter motor :pale:

Right, I've been playing now for 4 hours and I have found that if I push the starter nothing happens, so with the bike in 2nd gear I hold the horn and rock the bike, when the horn sound without hesitation I know I can hit the starter button and she will fire up, then I have lights, indicator and so on.

So there is a flat spot on the comutator (Mr BMW told me that big word Very Happy ) I can't undo the two bolts that hold the starter motor in place, so I'm kind of stuck really. If I want a new starter it's £278.57, unless someone on the forum know's where they are a bit cheaper.

OK, thats it, off to bang my head agaist a wall.

Not necessarily a flat spot on the commutator, but it sounds like it could do with at least a clean.

What's wrong with the two bolts, that means you can't get them undone?

There is nothing wrong with the two bolt, just my allen keys are not the right size? Don't want to screw them up so I've got a friend who's a mechanic coming on Thursday afternoon. For now I will rock the bike to get the starter into a possition where she will fire up on the button.

The electrical gremlins you describe are so common that my money's still on a 'dusty' starter. The dealer will almost always mention a 'flat spot'. Rarely is there a need to replace the unit when a good clean out is mainly what they need.
A 4 or 5mm allen key and a flat blade screwdriver are all one needs to take the starter out, with a wiggle as you pull it backwards with both hands being careful not to damage the rubber O-ring on its nose, after removing the ECU and battery, of course. As I said, there are several posts on how this is done. I would link you to them but am using a mobile and the search is too complicated. It's an easy fix. Give it a go.

BMW man speak with forked tongue. So you will fork out your money. Tell him to get stuffed and take it to an auto electrician. The flat spot bit is bull$hit it needs new brushes and a clean.
I have fixed many of those ND starters over the years and have never seen a flat spot on a commutator yet.

You can ored new brushes from www.motobins.co.uk, or www. motorworks.co.uk. Cheap and easy to fix by any electrician. I think its Nippon Denso product.
