So in reading a service manual for the K100 [still hunting a riders handbook], it mentions using a c-spanner to measure the engine oil. So searched the forum and found amongst a whole lot of interesting stuff I can use a piece of dowling marked at the right lengths.

I understand though the main purpose of the c-spanner is to adjust the rear suspension. So my question is Do I need one for teh susupesion or will another tool do the job?

More than often you can do it with your hand, just grab and twist.

An original equipment C spanner tool has dual uses but none of them is for engine oil. Use the right hand side sight glass for that, halfway up the glass on the centre stand is ideal. A C spanner is commonly used for measuring gearbox oil secondarily, and adjusting the original equipment rear shock, firstly. See whatcha got for a back shockie then determine if it uses a C spanner. Mine uses a narrow rod on a threaded wheel. Got a picture of your shockie?

The reason for asking is that is that I was looking at ordering some parts from Moto-bins and while I can make up a toolkit from spanners etc I already have, they appear only to have a C-spanner as part of a toolkit for 69 pounds. So was wondering if I can get away without it.

Also, giving I am placing an order soon, do you think anyone else would be interested in getting stuff from Moto-bins and want to join in the order? Happy to forward post when it got here.

Wombat, on page 43 of the Clymer manual is a diagram explaining how to make the measuring tool. I made one out of aluminium with a couple of scribe marks on it.
It is a piece of metal, L shaped (to hook over the oil filler hole), the length of the straight dipstick is at least 126 mm from where it hangs over the oil filler lip, with two marks at the end, the top oil level is set at 116 mm from the top and the lower level is 10 mm below that (I made my tool about 10 mm longer so I could see where the oil was if below the low level.)
Sounds like double dutch but I can't figure out how to post the picture for you.

Have looked at service manual and got diagram for c-spanner. Will look at making one. Definitely cheaper than buying the toolkit.

OK - this is really embarrassing. I mean, I should have asked myself if you make up a toolkit, where are you going to put it? And mightn't there already be one there?

Yep - had a mate around to look at the new toy and casually mentioned I still need to pop the seat - which he did since he just got a K1100RT [and yes, I told him about this forum]. There was this empty tray and a plastic panel that when removed revealed a great spot to put tools etc - just like the ones already there. It looks original with all hex keys, spanners including a c-spanner, pliers etc plus spare fuses, wire etc.

I was so excited then thought - great this will have a few of guys rolling around laughing.

So I have taken steps to decrease my ignorance and hopefully reduce my chances of putting my foot in it having read the Riders Handbook which I got to access through the download section. Some really useful information in it.

Don't forget there is another hiding place....a compartment under the tail piece. There should be a black cover over it. Just pop it upwards and there is plenty of space there. This is the way into your tail light as well....if and when you blow a bulb.

I'm discovering quiet a lot about the bike just reading Rider's Handbook. Typical guy thing - have a go and THEN read the manual.

No worries....plenty of time to learn. Having a naked red K100 is the best thing since sliced bread (funny, I don't like sliced bread) and of course you join a very unique club......not sure how many in the forum, but it is only you and me in the eastern states...I think. Any more out there?
