For any OZ riders who want to sample a small, remote rally, the annual Karuah River Rally is on from the 11 - 13 Feb, 2012 at Frying Pan Creek, about 30 kilometres from Dungog, New South Wales. Bring your rain gear, it's in the rainforest, but when/if it's hot there's a nice cool river to sit and soak in. $25 will get you in and breaky.

I'm leaving Friday morning.

In 2010 I went via Summerland Way. then inland further on twisty roads past Gloucester Tops. It was less than eight hours, though I was living further south in Banora Point then. The dirt road bit is an easy roll into the actual site. No knobbies required. It rained Saturday night and after packing up my sodden tent I hit the trail before the masses had a chance to turn the track into a quagmire. Hey, it's red mud, at least!

The actual campsite is in a heavily wooded glade at the end of the road with the creek on one side and acres of grass with stands of shade trees. It's a large enough area so that you can get away from midnight snorers, late-night loud talkers, and party types, & etc. Bring yer own grog and decent food as the club puts on some paste-like substances. I recall campfires, but in lieu of that tins of some sort of deliciousness might be required. Dungog has a well-appointed IGA and a coupla pubs, a servo, fish n chips and a good pie shop. There'll be stacks of bikes about the place as it's an all brands rally. It's worth a long weekend away.

When d'ya reckon you'll head out, KF? I think I'll depart on Friday morning early. I dunno who else is going yet from up our way. I might be able to ride out to meet you for lunch on the way if we're in sync...two of Blakey's favourites...Macca's...and red K bikes. Well, yours is still sorta red.

How'd that clutch disc replacement go?

I was thinking somewhere like Maccas Grafton. Yeah got the clutch out and gearbox back in and am working on the cruise control. Both the steel discs were warped and the only contact was about 5mm around the outside edge so no wonder it wouldnt hook up well. I managed to find one good pressure plate and the other was trued in the lathe so all should be good.

K Freak & Charlie, where do you expect to stop Friday night?

Some Beemer-riding mates from the Brissy area are stopping at The Peel in Nundle. As you likely know that's just south east of Tamworth below Walcha. It'd be a sweet inland ride down from there to Gloucester Tops and on to Dungog to the rally site on Saturday, or we could have our own Picnic at Hanging Rock! $45 a single and up. What do you say as an option?

They're all three on dual sports GS models and eagre to sample some dirt (mud with all the recent rain) roads in the region so I don't know their trajectory towards Nundle. But for us and our previous suggestion of meeting in Grafton, which might not make sense for KF now, we'd have to decide on an inland route via Warwick, etc., or whether the Pacific Highway, Summerland Way to Grafton and then up the Gwydir Highway will do. It's a nice road up into the rainforest since repaving took place a few years ago. Lemme know what you think 'cause if it's a goer I'd wanna make a booking.
Cheers.

Righto, three single non-en suite rooms have been booked at the Peel Inn in Nundle. I've heard they've got excellent counter meals and very cold beer.

We can plot and plan our route closer to the ETA. At least we know where the first stop is. Cheers.

Lads, really sorry I can't attend the KRR at Frying Pan Creek. I've spent many years in that area with my work (major comms site at Berrico Trig, just up the road from Frying Pan, and many years of trail riding and enduros...Forest 300 and all that on the mighty Ossa and Husky 430). From Nundle, I wouldn't go via Barry and Ellerston...it is a goat track FWD only, done it once in a fully laden Commodore station wagon, limited slip diff and country pack. JUST made it, with some v.steep climbs and downhills, and about 20 rocky creek crossings. The road from Nundle to Hanging Rock is tarred, but then to go to Nowenendoc, there's about 40Km of nice graded dirt Forestry road. There's also about 12Km of dirt road before you reach Thunderbolts.

Maybe back to Dungowan, turn right along a beaut river valley, up Port Stephens Cutting (about 10Km of really narrow twisties) and then to Thunderbolts.

Alternatively, out of Nundle, road to Timor is also many Km of gravel road, following the River Isis, then Gundy, Scone, highway to Singleton, then Gresford, Bingleburra Range to Dungog (nice jollies!) Then left at Bandon Grove towards Chichester Dam, right onto the Wangat Trig road, then right onto Middle Ridge road, past Tellegherry camping area, up the hill and then right into Frying Pan.

I hope this has been of some assistance, and if any queries arise, please don't hestitate to call, as I am quite familiar with area.

Cheers, Rickmeister.

It's a good thing we Three Musketeers are there to assist one another should trouble arise...or is it more like the Three Stooges!?

Call me Curlie...

I must admit that that is the way I would go, ie, Nundle, Wallabadah (turkey capital of Oz!), New England to Singleton, then left to Gresford etc. The only unavoidable bit of dirt road is the approx 15-20Km from Chichester Dam road to Frying Pan. It's narrow and winding and sometimes frequented by logging trucks and echidnas and snakes and other wild life. Some caution will be required.

Hi guys,
I'd love to meet you at the rally but won't have bike ready by then. Still sorting electrics before I go for blue slip.

Hope to catch you somewhere down the road.

Have a great ride,
Dave (Taree NSW)

Got an email from a friend who rang the organisers. The word is that the bridge and road that got washed out last year have reopened, but if there's too much additional precip the rally has the use of Dungog's showgrounds. Turn up at the Dungog Hotel for word when you get to town. Either way, we're on.

No need to preregister.
