I'm refitting the driver and passenger footrests to their respective plates but I'm struggling to get this done.  Is there a trick to getting the parts lined up and the pin inserted?  The process I've been working with so far is to have inserted the pin through the rest and then attempt to fit the tension spring, spool and plastic spring end afterwards.  I can't get the spring to seat in the hole provided for it on the footrest.  There has to be a better way to get this done.  Any advice is gratefully accepted.  I want to avoid scratching up my footpeg plates at all costs since they are freshly painted.

I put the pin all the way through, then fit the spring, it will sit off centre. Then I push the grey plastic bush onto the pin and it centres the spring. You need to help the spring over the edge of the bush and it's tough on your fingers but once it's started it will push on.

The plastic bush needs to be aligned so that the angled face is correctly positioned as once it's gripped by the spring it's nigh-on impossible to rotate it.

It's not in the parts catalog but many K bikes came with a little black plastic cap on the tip of the spring to keep from scraping the peg plate surface.

Thanks Mike and Duck.  I used both techniques.  The left side went on great according to Duck's procedure; the right side was solved with Mike's technique.  There was barely enough space to drift in the split pin on the right but I managed.  I did use those end caps to save the paintwork.

Rubbers provide the springiness on the passenger pegs only, Charlie.  Those were a breeze to fit compared to the driver's pegs.
