I have some new grips - BMW ribbed variety to replace the small and shiny sportsbike items currently on the machine. The bike does not have heated grips.

My plan for this simple opertion is:

- Remove bar end weights
- Cut off old grips carfeully
- Slide on new grips (see question below)
- Reattach bar end weights

My question is: do I need to use glue, hairspray or nothing to secure the new grips to the bars? Seems there are various views out there. If glue, what sort would you reccomend? I have a big pot of Evo-Stick that looks a possible candidate.

Okay: Never done it for motorbikes, but I spend many, many years mountain biking and putting probably more stress on the grips.

I used $2 supermarket hairspray - liberally spray the inside, slide on. When you need to remove them, lift up one end and squirt water in, then work them around. They never shifted on me even when I was fit, strong and wrestling up rocky trails

Downside: If it rains, they might get slippery, so a turn of wire around the inboard end might not go astray. I cycled in the rain and didn't have problems, but you may decide it's not worth the risk, here.

I have done a few grip replacements but not on a K, removal took heaps of CRC . WD40, aerosol and heaps of working twisting. Or cut them off.
Fitting, wipe off the CRC slide 'em on. never had one move. don't see any need to use any "product".

I cut the old ones off carefully with a Stanley knife, cleaned up the bars and used a little Evo stick on the bars when I put the new ones on. Feel and look lots better.

Here's a pic with one off and one on.Grey grip on right is the old style. New BMW black grip on left. It's all a matter of tatse but I do much prefer the Beemer grips.

I use regular soap and water. When the soap dries, the grips stay in place.

if the grips don't move with no glue , don't bother. This way you will be able to persuade them off with WD40 if you need to for whatever reason without cutting them off.

I got a set of foam grips from beemerboneyard.com they were called foam grip covers for stock BMW grips these I slid with some difficulty over my existing BMW foam grips, no glue was needed to have them stay firmly in place.

They are a huge improvement increasing the diameter of the grip and making riding much easier on long journeys because the grip has less slip on my gloves and also being larger diameter I don't have to curl my fingers as much to hold the grip. They were $5.95 a pair so I thought they were excellent value.
