Hi,

I documented my exploits in converting my 1988 K100RS into an RT model elsewhere on this forum -- in the Tutorial and Your Own Renovation sections. Rather than post all sorts of pictures in this forum, I'll show one (below) and redirect you to my Picassa album for others.



The conversion was worth the effort I feel. I was out for a "shake-down" ride on the weekend past (July 10). I went with others from the BMWMCO to Mosport for the Parts Canada Superbike Challenge. The ride was great and the bike felt great. It was comfortable; there was no buzzing and numbness from the handlebars, the windprotection offered by the larger fairing was just to my liking and it worked flawlessly.

The screen interests me though as it is an unusual size and I was wondering how much protection it offers.

Mine has the standard screen and it is essentially too low for me and the other option is a really tall screen which is not an aesthetic option.

That screen is modified BMW RT screen. I suspect that the donor bike was in an accident at some point in its life because there were cracks around the left mirror mount running through to the backside of the main fairing and scrapes on the lowers -- both of which were repaired by the guy who painted the parts. Anyway, I believe that the RT screen suffered some impact that damaged it. The owner cut the screen down to that size to eliminate the damaged part.

You may have noticed that I am seeking a K1100 LT windscreen to replace this modified one. This screen I have now offers very little protection to my upper torso, similar to an RS screen. I get buffetting around my helmet and shoulders when at speed. The large main fairing cuts most of the wind and I feel little wind/buffetting below my shoulders. I think the electric windshield will offer adjustability to the riding conditions.

Am I missing something here? Is the RS engine a higher tune than an RT? I can't think of another reason to do this otherwise. I'm not dissing the workmanship, just curious.

I'm not sure what you mean by "higher tune" but if the question translates to "Why would someone change a sporty RS into a sedate RT?" then it comes down to personal preference. I prefer a touring riding style with a more upright seating positoin and greater element protection afforded by the larger fairing. The guy with whom I traded fairing parts prefered a sports class riding style with a forward-leaning riding position to get more in-tune with the bike, smaller frontal area offering less wind resistance and more nimble feel through the corners.

I can see where it's more convenient to swap parts than sell one to buy another. So there is no difference between an RS engine or gear ratios to an RT then?

There was no difference in the RT/RS engine and only a slight difference in final drive ratios on the RT and the RS. Typical was 3.09, 3.00, 2.91 on a K100RT, and 2.81 on a K100RS. This gave the RT a bit higher top end speed than the RS but the RS had slightly better low end accelleration because of the lower ratio. I have never felt (or missed) the difference.

Rob, beautiful work. You have done to your K100RS what I would like to do to my K75s.
So are you going to still call it an RS or an RT conversion? We should meet up for a coffee some time. I would love to see it up close.

I don't blame you. I haven't been to Nova Scotia since the early 80's but I still think of it being about the most beautiful place I have ever visited.

Good observation. That screen always made me cringe. It came with the RT fairing I traded. So, as soon as I possibly could, I replaced the screen with an adjustable LT screen I bought off someone on another board. That old screen appeared to me to be a standard RT screen that suffered an accident. It was cut down and the edge polished, probably just below the original damage. If you look closely at my avatar, you'll see the present screen I'm using.
