Here in Tassie I have just been quoted $35 for a genuine oil filter (Knecht/Mahle OC91) !!!
I have researched alternatives and found that Purolator have an alternative - PL10241 Pure One, not to be confused with their standard range, this is the premium type filter they offer, with exactly the same pressure relief valve setting as the BMW filter.
An independant guy has also written quite a bit on the net about various filters, he's also conducted tests, cut open and examined the paper quality & quantity etc. and concludes that Purolator Pure One filters are good quality products.
Has anyone used these filters ? Advice and opinions much appreciated,

regards,
Dennis

The European 'Donit' brand, un-stickered like the OEM filter, from Motobins, with new-design tool in the box, £5 each, which translates to about AU$8.00...get a few of them with something else you might need as a spare to ease the shipping charges from the UK. That's my choice.

The subject of oil filters has had stacks of coverage and there are heaps of other quality brands available too, and somewhere here you can find that most definitive and exhaustive list.

You may want to try Ryco Z418 from any supplier near you. I've payed as little as $8 for one.

I know, I know, it is not BMW, Bosch or European..., but seriously have a look at this website. There are others just like it, but this one will do. I like the "Conclusion"... It makes sense.

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml
or
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html

They all look familiar internally? Yes, because they are all paper filter elements, the only difference is the amount of parer there. The fact is the more the better.

Yes, I use Z418 and it appears to work well. Because it is a local product, it is cheap enough to change each time I change oil.

As long as the appropriate filter removal/installation tool you're using, for the Ryco Z418 or whichever, fits up inside the narrow cavity (since a typical tool won't fit in most cases, but you've gotta love those narrow cavities!) then I reckon you're 'right to use another filter brand. I do think we 'worry' a tad more than we should about some things. I change the blasted, dripping, messy, pain in the bum oil filter with every oil change and this has always worked well for me in my 800,000+ (miles) of motorbike riding.

Apparently the Z418 fits some of the BMW 3 series cars...and the removal tool fits like a glove.
Also double-check that the old rubber seal comes off with the old oil filter...got caught a couple of times with that!

Alternative oil filter Fit%20Adpt

I had a problem from a bike I bought and the filter was knackered and obviously not been removed with oil changes because the corners had been rounded off.
This was my solution to the problem and it worked OK.

This is a very smart solution. I had to fight with one before, and I had to destroy it with a screw driver. Your way would have saved me a lot of time.

I contacted Purolator,
They recommended their filter # Purolator ML16825 over the Purolator pure-one filter, siting oil back-pressure from the filter onto the oil pump causing possible damage.
The ml filter is specific to powersports.

Cheers, M
