I have this infuriating little oil leak at the front of the motor that I cannot find. Thought it was the cam timing chain cover and resealed it 3 times, so that's not it, then thought Hall Sensor cover but that's not it, so now I'm thinking water/oil pump cover. The question is, if I pull off the cover, what happens? Does oil and coolant gush out, or just weep a bit? Or does it not leak oil ever so look somewhere else?

The Haynes manual says to drain everything. I'm guessing you'll get a gusher if you don't.

I was advised by my mechanic that an oil seep I have (doesn't make it to a drip, just coagulates slightly) was a sign I would have to consider that repair down the track.

So yes, examine that option, and drain your fluids first. Always good to refresh them, anyway.

I have seen an oil leak on the oil pressure sensor. (on the side of the pump)
It was difficult to locate because the electrical connection is covered by a rubber cap. The leak was the sensor itself and not the thread.

club_c, if the oil is not really leaking much, wait until the next time you change your oil.

If it's just the oil pressure sensor and you need to change it urgently, just tilt the bike back and that should be enough to stop the oil pouring out of the hole when the sensor is removed.

I have the same leak as you...I'll wait until you fixed yours before I fix mine! Very Happy

hey club c ......there is a small hole at the bottom of the oil pump which is the breather for both the water pump and oil pump .
from reading through here, the bmw folks designed it to be an indicator for the state of the bushings/seals on the pump drive shaft.

the actual hole location is slightly behind and more towards the back near the "sump"

i wonder if this is what you are seeing ???

the hole charlie mentions is front bottom of the motor
and you'll get coolant if the water pump seal fails and oil if the oil pump seal fails
It may be your pressure sender of course, but any leaks on the top of the
water/oil pump gasket make their way out here too so its not always apparent.

If you take the front cover off, coolant will gush out so drain coolant into a cleanbucket first
you wont lose any oil though, unless you go further.
Its a face to face seal so no new gasket required to have a look around.and clean all the
accumulated crap out of the nooks and crannies

So a closer look would indicate it's above the oil/water pump. I'm back to thinking it's the cam chain cover Sad I think I'll spray some deodorant powder or foot powder in the area and track it's progress...
