My cooling fan comes on when I am stuck in traffic for more than 1 minute even when outside temp under 60 F.  I some how remember it not coming on in cooler temperatures but I may be mistaken.

If the fan comes on and not the warning light then its doing what is should.

Maybe a cooling system flush and fresh coolant might be in order and check you have the system full and no air locks.

I imagine you have the cast water pump impeller, not much to go wrong on it. But a sticky thermostat could give you issues so check out the rad cap seal and the thermostat.

If the bike does have the cast iron impeller then it can turn into a lump of rust and pretty much stop pushing coolant around. I wish I'd kept or photographed the one I took out of LFB; it literally was just a lump of rust. I spent hours cleaning it and then binned it anyway for the better pressed steel one. It's worth taking a look and it's an easy job. All you need is a 5mm allen key and a tube of RTV to reseal the pump cover.

Oh - and either new coolant or a clean bucket to catch the current lot in Very Happy Fastest way to drain the coolant is to pull the pipe off the side of the pump. It will take hours if you use the official method of taking out the 6mm drain bolt.

And...if you use the drain plug...it also takes hours to get it resealed.......since you have a gauge you would be removing the sensor as it replaces the drain plug.
