Hi All, sometimes things just go round & round.

I sold my K1100 back in April 2019 to a young guy whom I suspected was going to play the Cafe Racer game. I was correct in that I saw all the plastic parts for sale a few months later and never gave it another thought. Today I had a phone call from a fellow member of the BMW club here in Newcastle who regularly rides his pushbike around his area and had noticed a pile of what looked like BMW K bike bits on the kerb ready for council rubbish collection. Today he decided to stop and have a closer look and take a couple of photos to send to me in case I might know anyone who could use them.

Lo and behold, I recognised them as off my K1100 as soon as I saw the photos - so it seems that Cafe project has gone the way of most. Anyway my mate is going to retrieve them and I will pick them up in a couple of days, then post some photos for any Aussies who might want them. I won't hang onto them for long as I don't have storage space but for anyone interested - watch this space and we'll see what happens.

Sad fate for Ks slaughtered by wanabee unskilled custom makers... K1100 bits free for Aussies 177381

I rode my K1100LT yesterday to go to work.
 50 km to ride.
Soon after I started, the rain began to fall. No rain suit...never mind, it will be sunny at the end of the day.
Much worst at the end of the day :heavy rain all the time. 
I did not even had to change my pants when I came back home. They were slightly wet at the bottom, nothing more.
LT fairings lives matter!

Goodonya for the attempt at salvage. The general manager at a bike shop where I once worked had a hankerin' for a stripped down K1100RS. He ejected all of the plastic save the side covers, whacking a plain, round headlamp on and flat 'bars. I snatched them all up. They're the deep 'red' colour the code of which I'm not sure of. I have them hanging securely in a wooden shed out back. It's been at least five years, but they don't spoil like a side of beef would. The GM took one longish ride through the desert south west, eventually grew tired of his now-less-than-ridable K, and sold it off for next to nothing. It irks me slightly to see this sort of thing go on as it's a fad that will fade in time. The K bike will outlast many a casual whim. Meantime, if anyone needs a near-complete K1100RS fairing...

Well folks, here is what the raid on the rubbish has yielded thanks to my mate in Newcastle. All of the green bits are off my previously owned K1100 which began life as a 1995 K1100 Police bike that I purchased from the Police Department in 1997 & sold in 2019.

This batch looks to me to be 1 of  K1100 rear inner guard and maybe 2 of K100 rear inner guard, 2 of K1100 rear section front guards.

This lot is fairly obvious being the fairing top half, both side sections (bit of bark off the left one courtesy of me tipping over in a gravel car park), ducktail, radiator section and two standard K1100 side covers that I purchased and fitted to complete the standard look as opposed to the shorter police style side covers.K1100 bits free for Aussies Img_5911
Here we have a set of Lucas bars that I purchased to fit to the bike when I decided to remove the fairing for summer time and ride as a naked bike (see below - for old times sake), I assume the fork springs are from my K1100 (can't imagine why they are being thrown out), 2 of K1100 front fairing mounts - one of which was modified by me after the pressed metal section on the original cracked both sides at the steering head, I think from memory that the H section bracket is the battery tray support and a K100 exhaust.

Here we have the glove boxes, their mounting brackets and lids (inside one of which I have thoughtfully listed for myself the solo and two-up tyre pressure for ready reference), some air intake bits (K1100 & K100), side mirrors and the little brackets that go inside the fairing (the poor old mirrors jumped off a few times in my ownership due to bird strikes), lift handle, two little brackets at the top left that are secured to the lower rear of the tank for the BMW tank bag straps to attach, instrument mount plate, rear inner guard top bracket, the little bundles of bits with masking tape around them are fairing side piece mounts (my handwriting on them to identify where they came from is still legible), seat latch, seat hinge/stay, two brackets with the OEM velcro that hold the lower section of the K1100 front guard rear section in place, a couple of wind deflector bits from inside the fairing and a black piece of plastic that I don't recognise.

Hope someone can get further use out of these but please keep in mind that I do not have enough storage space at my current residence to hang onto this stuff long term. I'll check on here daily for a while so comment or send me a PM.

The black piece of plastic you don't recognise is a  rear indicator base. It's missing the lense etc.

Good try Dai but I am very familiar with the indicator bodies even if I didn't mention it in the text. The guy must have found a market for the indicator lenses as there were none in the lot at all.

The bit I'm not sure about is the piece above the instrument mount block and rear guard mount bracket. It looks like it might be a section of mudguard but my foggy memory couldn't place it on the K1100 - however don't panic, I have just gone back into RealOEM and see that it is the lower guard section at the front of the rear wheel.

I was pretty slack wasn't I when I posted the photos?  Very Happy

And then we learn to hate them. I'm currently stuck taking my front forks off. Managed to round out the lower pinch bolt on the right side. Now I'm into heat and chisels. If I didn't have to finish this project within the next week I would just chuck it.

Thanks but it would have made the job much more extensive. Five minutes with a heat gun focused on it and then some hard beating with a chisel and hammer and it came off. The more difficult part was replacing  the bolts on both sides (this is the lower bolts on the fork tubes, 10mm 50mm long).  I wound up having to go to three different hardware stores to find stainless steel versions. Well one store closed 11 minutes before I arrived and the last one had all I needed. But it was a pain to chase around. Not to mention the weather here is being 96 degrees F and I was working outside in it.

That's annoying. I think that one of the 'advantages' of living rural is the habit of keeping large stocks of motorcycle fasteners - actually, the habit of keeping large stocks of just about anything. I have no idea how close the nearest hardware shop is that sells that sort of stuff (at least twenty-five miles, if not further), so I have to order online. When it comes down to it, it's always cheaper to order multiple quantities because you know that sooner or later, you're going to use them.

At the risk of asking a loaded question, you did use copper grease on reassembly?

At the risk of getting into one of those we don't use that stuff, I've been using Permatex Anti-seizing lubricant. And it is silver in color which always gets me when you guys start talking about copper. As to the 25 mile range. My local hardware store (walking distance) closed up due to the ongoing political/criminal issues in Oakland. Which actually is an attractive place except for the political/criminal situation. And therefore I have to drive to get to a hardware store. Except that my buddy, Greg, gifted me with 25 lbs of fasteners off BMW motorcycles. Which if I can ever get sorted... In the meantime it is easier to drive over to the Hardware store.

Permatex - seems to be a multi-purpose anti-seize compound as it has aluminium in there too. We sometimes use the tradename 'copaslip' as lazy-speak for the copper-coloured stuff. There's lots of arguments over which anti-seize compound to use with which dissimilar metals (melting points, reactivity, life time) but as far as my research goes, it appears that a copper-based compound is a good general anti-seize compound.
