Hi all. I have just purchased a K1100LT and wanted to chat with owners of K series that have Police-styled bodywork. Seems like there are more K100 owners with that style.

as far as I can recall the only differences between a police and a civilian K1100LT bodywork would be the single seat, the radio box, possibly the sidecovers.  The fairing and front bodywork are the same (except for the extra holes the police bikes have for microphones etc.) Police bikes have large crashbars to allow mounting of sirens, civilian bikes have more slim fitting crashbars if they have them fitted.

I have a single seat but no radio box.

I have a k75 RTP. The rear box and single seat were mated with early style side covers on the Police bikes, If you are converting to normal touring tail you could use side covers of the k1100 or normal k100 to mate to it

Hi there BeemerNewbie, welkome to the forum. I'm sure you will enjoy your K1100LT.

I owned an ex-police K1100 for 22 years and it had 180,000km on it (140K of which were mine - completely trouble free) when I sold it a few years ago. They are a wonderful long distance tourer solo and in my opinion they are even better with a pillion aboard. My estimate is that my wife sat on the back for around 90,000km during our ownership. I purchased mine direct from the Police Force myself at their disposal auctions and immediately had it painted and fitted with civilian ducktail, badges and K1100 side covers and dual comfort seat plus touring panniers (whatever you do make sure you keep those small panniers which BMW call City Cases as they are like the proverbial rocking horse poo). For the last few years of my ownership, after my wife retired from the pillion seat, I turned it into a naked bike with screen using a K100 naked radiator shroud and the original standard side covers. I've dug out some photos for you to peruse.

The K100 side covers which from memory are the same on the Police K1100, have a prong on the rear end which engages with the rear bodywork. The K1100LT (non-police) have a notch at the rear end. I inserted a 1/4" brass screw into the hole in the bodywork and left it protruding enough for the "K1100 Touring" side cover to clip onto. Hopefully the photos will explain.



When it became a naked bike it looked like this (with the original side covers).



There's a thread on here somewhere that detailed what I did in the naked bike conversion.
