There once was a man called Matt Capri, and he was a speed merchant. From his, and other engineering workshops he contracted with, came mechanical objets d'art for Beemers of both the R & K variety. He made bikes go fast at exotic-sounding places like El Mirage in California. His ads, printed out in black & white, in club magazines and posted out to performance hungry Beemerphiles like myself, had me longing, nay, lusting for some of these tasty pieces of speed and performance-enhancing metal. Here are a few images for your perusal, all of them in some small way, now pieces of BMW recent-history.

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1410
In 1990 the complete four-into-one exhaust system would set you back the princely sum of US$450

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1411
For merely US$905 one could eliminate that "troublesome fuel injection" and change it out for some real, practical horsepower a man with tools could actually work on. (Tongue firmly planted in cheek).

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1412
US$1595 got you a 12.5:1 piston, 1138cc piston and sleeve kit.

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1413
Get cammed for US$695 a pair!

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1414
No rev limit, "up to 16 mph higher top speed", US$645...

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1415
What good is all of the added power if you reach the limits too soon? US$580 lets you spin it up even higher!

Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Dscn1416
Breathe easier, US$79.95...

I'd like to get my hands on a few of these bits just for some fun. Imagine a warehouse or a closed up shop somewhere with a shelf full of dusty Luftmeister parts...

At one time I had a black ceramic coated Luftmeister 4-1.  When I re-fitted a sidecar it would no longer fit with the subframe. I now wish I'd never sold it, irreplaceable.

It sounded horn.

Thanks for posting this stuff. Where'd you find it?

My turbo K75 has the mod'd cams and had (before I converted it to a paralever) the Lufty transmission gears too.  I suspect that since it's a turbo it may also have the modded ICU as well.

My K100 has a Lufty exhaust.

Rummaging through some old catalogues I'd had stored away for the longterm, I discovered a Competition Accessories, spiral-bound folder with all manner of OEM and aftermarket flyers and brochures of BMW goodies on offer at the time. The 1990 BMW clothing and accessories catalogue is particularly funny, and brought back some fond and not-so memories for me. In it are slender Euro trash in ghastly red leather and/or textile riding gear, white boots, early system helmets and big hair for the ladies.

Here are some more tasty Lufty bits.

My old bomb of a K-RS has no rev limiter, otherwise stock with K11 TBs, Motad exhaust, and 18" radial tyres. Could it be the PO, once a Beemer tech from the Brissy area, replaced the ICU with one of the above-mentioned ignition control units, or fiddled with it hisownself? It might help explain why I can spin it well past redline and it wants to keep on climbing to the moon. I've bounced the speedo needle off 255 k/ph (157 mph) a coupla times now - dialed in using Karamba software. Factor in for tyre diametre & inherent speedo error and that's got to be nudging low 150s, higher than a stock bike but about in the top speed territory Luftmeister claimed it could go.

FYI: That Karabma program isn't the greatest.

If your PC sound card doesn't put out enough amplitude (like on a netbook that has a weak sound card in order to save battery life) then it doesn't work right.

Also, some bikes (like the K1100LT and some K100s) have different final drive gear ratios so just selecting a model/tire sizes isn't adequate.

I find it's best to confirm a properly calibrated speedometer with a GPS.

The drive ratios don't affect the speed reading it comes directly from the wheel speed.  I have found that my new laptop wont do the job like the old one.

Now you've gone and done it, made me feel like a dinosaur!  I remember all that stuff.  In fact, the rear suspension units still on my R100RS are Luftmeister bits.
I would like to point out that Matt didn't just disappear though.  He became frustrated dealing with BMW (imagine!) and took up with Triumph.  I kinda lost track of him for a while after that, but he did make the news some time back after being slapped with a huge fine for de-comissioning the air pollution equipment on bikes he was selling.
Matt was and is a real character.  I found that when I went to his shop, service was remarkably better if I had my girl friend with me.  Wink

1989, York, PA MOA national rally, hot, 9,000 attendees. I'd previously bought a chrome two-into-one Lufty pipe for my R90. The headers rattled in the collector. There was no clamp (and the taper prevented one) and no provision for tension springs. I lived with it for a month or so. I rang them a coupla times and got no response. Luftmeister were at the rally, selling. I waited my turn then enquired of Mr Capri concerning the fit of my new exhaust pipe. He listened for a brief moment then turned and grabbed a coupla springs off the table, saying, "weld some tabs onto the pipe for these."

He did a lot of R&D on the backs of his customers. You had to get used to that.

Well, we shared the same dream and mine became true.
Not on a dusty shelf but simply on eBay, I've just purchased a set of NOS Luftmeister K100 Parts.
Hi - lift cams, adjustable sprockets, set of monobloc valves, high rate valve springs and light collars, heavy duty piston axles, clutch, copper head joint, set of injectors...
For a very reasonable price, 300$. 450$ once delivered in France and taxes paid.

Once fitted in a flow-benched head with K75 pistons, it should result in a pretty funny engine...

I spoke to a former work colleague from Massachusetts the other day, between Chrissie & New Year's Day He still has his R90S from 1976, along with an R60/6 and an F800GT. We rode together in the late 1980s, early '90s. He knew I didn't like the rattle on the Lufty headers I had on my R75 (the one Matt Capri handed me the set of springs for back in 1989) and so I sold him those headers and single muffler. It is still on his bike!

Congratulations, JBT, on sourcing the gold mine of Luftmeister parts. It's funny to see that original post from 2014. It reminds me I had just returned to the States in mid-2012, and aside from the occasional holiday for a month or so every coupla years, I have not moved back there (to OZ) since then. In fact, have not been 'home' since November of 2018.

I still have the Luftmeister catalogue somewhere in the overflowing, busy place I call a garage.

That was a big part of the problem in those days...the way Lufty procured a design and then went elsewhere with it for a new, possibly cheaper, manufacturer, once they'd got the design copied. The folks at Black Hole don't mince words. Of course, that is a long time ago (starting 40 years ago).

Mr Capri eventually went to the (new) Triumph side and ran what I've heard of as a successful dealership in Northern California for many years afterwards.

Yeah. Unfortunately he showed up in a recent issue of Classic Bike (recent = about six months ago) all about how good he was at racing old Triumphs. One paragraph about how brilliant he was at turboing Bricks and f*** all about the ripoffs (sorry TWB - redact/edit if you think necessary). I didn't recognise the name on the byline, so my guess is that the article was written by a Stateside contributor rather than a staffer. That's how I used to work - pick a magazine, pick a subject and write it to match the readership.

The parcel just arrived today, but I was in Serbia and could not have it delivered.
I'll pick it up tomorrow at the DHL deposit.

Luftmeister parts are very rare here in France.
Arcueil Motor, a BMW dealer in Paris used to build a turbocharged K100RS with the Lufmeister parts in the 80's.  The bike was well known because many magazines had published papers about. But I never saw the bike, but it was exposed a feww years ago in a BMW racing bikes exhibitions a few year ago in Vincennes, near Paris:
Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister K100_r10

Not so far from home, in Switzerland, Fritz Egli had some Lufteister parts and probably used- or planned to use- turbochargers. He passed away maybe 10 years ago, and one turbocharger kit was advertised for sale, NOS.

A part from these, the only Lufmeister parts I saw for real in Europe were...in my garage. I purchased 10 years ago a Turbocharger kit for flat twins airheads, on Craigslist. At this time I started my business and the bikes of the customers never allowed me time to mount it. It's still waiting on a shelf, complete and in a good used condition, but silencers are missing. I had built a racing airhead, hich could have received it, but the engine configuration is designed for atmospheric intake, it would need to replace pistons and the specially designed heads to lower the compression ratio to fit the turbocharger. And turbochargers bikes are not allowed in most of races here.

About this K100 Luftmeister parts, I also have the receiving bike ready : :clic: . I probably have to flowbench the head to match the bigger valves but it should not be a hard job to install the kit. I'll probably use K75 pistons in this engine to raise compression ratio.

Well...I can't wait, tomorrow is Christmas!

According to the info from RB Racing in the link given by TWB, that will be an early version with the single turbo radiator. Later ones have a split radiator to allow for better cooling of the engine.

See TWB - some of us do click on your links! Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister 44271

So as it was promised, here's what was in the parcel delivered yesterday:

A pair of pointy camshafts, with cam heights evocating a pornstar morning glory.
Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Img_2280

A pair of camshafts pinions with adjustable offset (to use with or without turbocharger, for road or track use)
Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Img_2278

Heavy duty clutch disc and diaphragm:
Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Img_2279
(I have no idea about the purpose of the black plate with holes. I suppose it's a plate to adjust gearbox freeplay, Harley V twin timing or something like that, but it has probably nothing to do with K100 parts. Anybody recognizing this is welcome!)

A set of 4 monobloc valves (exhaust or intake? ), plus 2 other valves too small to fit the K100 head (K 16V maybe?), with heavy duty twin valve springs set and titane spring retainers and washers to set the springs height:
Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Img_2282

A set of 4 large fuel injectors, 4 reinforced piston pins and a copper thin head joint to increase compression:
Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister Img_2281
Some documents are giving precious information about setting the camshafts and the spring valves.

And all of this for 300$, + 50% of transport and taxes... Once upon a time in a land called Luftmeister 723598

The plate could be to insert in the sump to prevent oil surge and thus starvation under hard acceleration.

The other supposed 'use' of an anti-surge plate is to stop the crankshaft from being slowed by hitting flying oil i.e. allowing it to spin up faster. All well and good in theory, until you remember that the pistons are usually lubricated and cooled by oil splash. Outside of very high power and specially designed racing engines, it's a solution in search of a problem.

If that plate goes in the sump, where is the cutout for the oil filter?  Shouldn't there be a big hole for the filter?

If you look at post one of this thread you will see a photo of a plate that looks very similar, calling it an engine block off plate, and adapting a K&N air filter, and it's spose to give you a few more horsepower.

The differences in the two photos might be due to the K75 and K100 having different part numbers, or a later version, maybe.

But, but, that's not nearly as much fun as the little dog laughing to see such sport, and the dish running away with the spoon.

I still have that Lufty catalogue in storage if anyone wants finer details on pieces 'n' parts once obtainable.

I'm fixing up a modified 1987 K75S that has been sitting for many years.
The original owner was a family friend and passed away a couple years ago.

The bike has a Luftmeister exhaust, Keihin flat slide carbs, Corbin seat, and an aftermarket front fender (perhaps also Luftmeister?) and I dont even know what else..

If anyone has any info on the parts, I'd appreciate the information.

Thanks All!!

A good find, and you knew the original owner!? Bonus. It's a piece of history worth resto-ing.

That looks like the full Lufty catalogue chucked at that motorbike. The front mudguard is pictured in the catalogue images I posted ages ago. Might that be an 18" widened rear wheel as well? Somewhere in my pile of catalogues is the copy I posted, it will be sure to raise your interest, but it won't help with repair or diagnostics, and parts availability is on the owner.

I bought an 86 K75C Luftmeister turbo about ten years ago. Even though it had 118K on it and needed a stem to stern rehab I was psyched to get my hands on one of the very few Lufty K75 turbos ever done (the overwhelming majority of Lufty turbos were K100s with  about 100 of those ever made)

When going through the old paper that came with it I discovered that it not only had the Lufty turbo but also the Lufty high performance cams. The 80s turbo is an antique that doesn't kick in until 4500-5000 which is fun but the high performance cams that add torque in the low end are a better mod.

Thank you!!

I saw the catalog posting in my searches which is how I found this forum.

The back wheel is a 17 inch, but I dont know if it was widened..  I measure 3 3/4 inches wide.  I just ordered a set of tires in the stock 130/90 v17 size instead of the old rubber which was 140/80 vb17.. Hoping stock size will fit.

I am fixing the bike up to get it in good running condition and ready for the original owners family to sell.
Would love to keep it, but dont have space or time to use it.

I got the engine freed up, changed the plugs, oil, coolant, brake fluid, battery and lots of cleaning.  Fortunately it had been put away well.   Remaining items are new tires and I have just found a very small leak from the front brake master cylinder and the front brake light switch isnt working

Bike has 107,000 miles, but there was a rebuild and likely parts hop-up at 103K.
Took it for a small ride around the neighborhood this week an it feels really strong (but I am used to much less powerful bikes..  35 years of Harleys and the past 2 years a 74 BMW R60/6)

The back wheel is the stock size. A 140/80-17 is a better tyre than the original skinny version, for traction, availability, & etc., is a recommended option, and fits, too.

I just got a bunch of documentation and full set of receipts from the estate of the original owner of my 1987 K75s,  and there was a copy of the Luftmeister press release after the 200 MPH BMW run from 1993..

Lots more cool stuff to go thru.. I'll post more as I dig thru it..

Matt Capri, the owner of Luftmeister, was an entrepreneur who apparently used a company called RB Racing in the US to develop the K100 turbo kits. I am interested because I own a kit and will install it on my ‘84 K100RS shortly.

RB Racing didn’t have a good relationship with Capri, they didn’t get paid for a lot of their work and kits that they provided him, or recognition for his record breaking salt flats run on a bike that they built for him. It’s a shame, I also have a Luftmeister exhaust on my SE, and quite like it.

I've now got about 600 miles on my 87 K75s with lots of Luftmeister bits..
It had been in storage for over 20 years by the original owner (and family friend), and I got it running this past October/November.

Takes a bit of cranking to get it started in the colder weather, and a long warmup till it is happy, but once warm it runs really well.
Hoping some more miles and warmer weather will help.. starts right up when warm.

I do have a copy of an old Luftmeister catalog.. I can try to find the turbo bits and post here if it helps..

It’d be great to see the catalog, I know my turbo kit is missing the exhaust from the turbo, but not sure if anything else is AWOL?

K75s start best with the factory exhaust. My K75s with factory exhausts start more easily than my K75 with a Staintune exhuast.

There is so much not stock on this bike that I dont think the factory exhaust would help ;-)
There is no choke, so I assume it is really just a warm weather bike (although I have ridden it in the low-mid 30s and it is fine after warmup)

What about a few bloody great big whacks of the throttle just prior to cranking the engine over when cold starting? I see accelerator pumps on those downdraft carbies.

Actually, that is what I do..
but once I hit the starter and it catches it wont take anything but none or the slightest throttle or it will die until it is good and warm.. Wont even cough/sputter, just die.

Still havent tried initial starts above 60 degree temps yet, so we'll see as spring progresses..
