If you don't mind changing the connector, the HES plates from the K1200 series will also fit the K100 and K1100 series. TWB measured one for me as I've been offered a K1200 plate and I wasn't sure it would fit. Ebay shows them around half the price of a K100 unit.

I would do that Charlie, but the cost of two HED + shipping is pretty much the same as a K1200 plate.

Somewhere deep within the Big Block thread there's a picture and details of what needs to be done to the connector from K12 to K100/1100 to be able to use the K12 plate. It's what I did when fitting a K1200RS engine to the K11 engine loom. I recall I swapped two leads colour for colour, like orange to black and vice versa. I'll have a squiz to find it. Unless Dai already knows the details and can inform us sooner...

I just did a speed read through the BB thread and I must not have posted up the wiring requirements for the HES plate swap. I'm sure I still have the diagramme that came with the pieces, somewhere in my garage. Let's see if I can find it and post it up.

I can get a CYHME56C (http://www.hallsensors.de/CYHME56C.pdf) for €14 each. Add the VAT and shipping and you hit €47.67. That's approx £43.30. The original K1200 plate cost £38.50 inc. shipping. I can't find the HES in the UK, so they have to come from Germany. A K100 plate? Think £90 and start climbing.

some time ago nigel found the right hall effects  and we bought as a group likely 10 or so , landed here  i think they worked out to about 12.50 aussie  each , so these days thats about 5 pounds each

at worst the jaycar equivalents are 24.00 or so aussie $  thats about 12 pounds  and they work correctly , well some time down the track 6 years later still going strong ..

just an observation

I'm going choppity-chop on the connector when mine arrives as I intend to fit a five-way Tyco waterproof connector. Nice to see that BMW haven't changed the colour codes just for the sake of being able to do it.

You will be swapping two of the pins to one another, including the insulated one, so careful with that axe, Eugene.

Thank you for consuming two hours of my life with that comment. Found the 1974 concert on YouTube that I was at Very Happy. Well, to be accurate, it was the night after the Earl's Court show.

Dammit!!! That was the FC Dave Swarbrick/Sandy Denny line-up too. I doubt I'd have appreciated it back then - I was only 11.

Sitting cuddled up one evening with my Pommie girlfriend at the time, watching PF perform during Live Aid or something or other and she turns to me with wonder and remembrance in her eyes and says, "Daz, why are they sooo good!?"

"As good as those brownies, dear?", I replied.

There were some big appreciation gaps for me too, but nothing to do with my age. It still felt like the 60s after all... Shocked

I picked up a used K1200 hall sensor for my K100-2V. Yes the connector are different and after reading this thread plus looking at what pics and wiring diagrams I could find I am left hesitant. I want to test the hall sensor (using tech from this site) as there is a 30 day free return policy from the vendor. Here's the color code and pin #s, the test procedures are for the K100 color code hence my dilemma. The plan is to change the connector on the k1200 hall sensor if it passes the test procedure.

K100                          K1200

1 shield                      1 shield
2 green (output)          2 black
3 red (+)                    3 brown
4 black (-)                   4 red
5 green (output)          5 orange

Do I use the pin numbers or color coding. One can see an obvious mix here that confuses.

Googling around..

http://www.kbikeparts.com/classickbikes.com/ckb.tech/0.ckb.tech.files/kwiring/K1200RS.SLP.Wiring.V1.0.pdf

Brown is ground
Red is +ve
Black is signal
Orange is signal

No personal knowledge of this at all, maybe check the sensor you have to confirm that Brown and Red are common to both pickups and take it from there?

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that Chris. There seems to be a peculiar parallel-series wiring setup inside the ICU which means that the brown wire is actually a signal wire and not earth, which would explain why the failure of one HES kills all four cylinders. I leave you to guess which wire really does go to earth...

@Bricklayer: use the colour codes. The K1200 HES plate is the same as the K75 and K100 plates except for the connector. Source of info: TWB, Motorworks and the fact that I've done what you are proposing.

Hmmmm, I need some bean juice and my VOM... " I leave you to guess which wire really does go to earth...".

Let's try/fry again, can anyone tell me how to wire this

K100                          K1200

1 shield                      1 shield -
2 green (output)          2 black -
3 red (+)                    3 brown -
4 black (-)                   4 red -
5 green (output)          5 orange -

FYI - colors are different so using the "color codes" isn't seems odd as a solution.

LAST MINUTE EDIT... just found this pic on another thread. https://www.k100-forum.com/t11049-hall-effect-sensor-questions-solved

Actually, looking at what you have written for the K100, that is wrong. It appears to be based on the 'normal' way of wiring an HES sensor where red is positive, black is negative and green is output. BMW don't do that for some reason best known to themselves. A stripped HES looks like this:

Substitute HES pickup plate Hes_wi10
Black to red, orange to black, brown to green and red to green. The wiring colours would have you believe that the two outputs are connected to +12v and earth. This is the only place on a K-series where brown is not earth and red is not live.

So, for testing, treat the K1200 HES plate as you would treat a K100 HES plate i.e. brown as brown, red as red etc. when connecting to the LED. Forget the pin numbers and ignore what the wiring colours appear to be telling you.

[Edit] Edited the edit because I took the metaphorical whip to the Moderator-In-Chief and made him do some work.

YIPPI! Now that's what I needed to clarify it- thanks!

I plan on NOT using the BMW connectors for the one on the bike that dry/heat rotted and the spare I just purchased as you may have mentioned doing in a previous comment.

Some days one goes from HES wiring to remembering Pink Floyd lyrics to what enhances musical enjoyment, with a side trip to Susan the often sweet but sharp-edged Pommie girl, then back to HES wiring. All in one post. Truly grand.

I can - later on - go to the garage and snap of piccie of what I did to the K12 HES connector for Big Block back in 2014/5.
