I frequently do, but it's usually down the arse end of the country in snowbird territory. And it won't fit in an overhead locker, more's the pity.

Dazza I'd kill to own one of your rides.  The 1200 is awfully appealing but I know I wouldn't get it past my missus  Smile

1150RT for $2300!

Why are these bikes worth so little? I know the 6 spds are preferred, but that's a lot of depreciation from new.

And these bikes are definitely in USA (not Aust)

Good luck moving

A US gallon (3.785 litres) of 'gas' down the street at the local station is currently $2.85. Living in Australia we're used to prices much higher due to the overall size of the market, what people are accustomed to, an added dollop of gravy for the man, and the tyranny of distance.

Just the basic maths shows that US$2300 Is approximately AU$3100, so there's that, too.

In 2012 my wife and I worked in Colorado (exchange teaching at Golden High School) for a year.
The exchange rate was (a very rare) AUS $1 = US$1.04.
US teachers' salaries were about 2/3 of ours.

I should've bought more toys than I did. But I did seize the opportunity to buy a "yank tank" ... an older GMC Yukon XL. What a boat! Heated seats were nice in the winter.

I blame my wife of course - she organised our hiring of a new Chev Suburban for our drive from LA to Colorado. Having spent several weeks driving the Tony Soprano mobile, only the Yukon matched the space inside.
Fond memories of the USA. Hope to get back at some stage...and maybe get a BMW1150RT for a good price.

Wow!  I just did a quick search of Craig's List and prices run from $1800 to $4400 for bikes that look almost new with mileage ranging from the 40's to the 80's.  I thought the depreciation on Bricks was bad.  I suspect the complexity and cost of dealer service might have something to do with it.  They look like a horror show to work on.  Several list ABS removal as if it is a selling point.

Fully integrated Servo ABS was BMW's worst idea for positive braking, ever. Plain Servo ABS was next. When it worked it worked, but the maintenance on the pump circuits with something like 15 bleed ports and the use of a tiny plastic funnel (from memory - 9 front, 6 rear) is absurd. It came into being around '03 and died a quiet death by about '08.

Maintenance on the the rest of the bike is as easy as pie. Or cake, if you prefer that. This bike got a high of 54mpg riding two up coming home from Alaska and averaged mid-40s two up and high-40s solo, regularly. At 136,000+ miles it does not burn a drop of oil. The 95+ HP is ample, the geometry contributes to it feeling lighter than it is and making it very easy to bend a curve into a pretzel, and the ergos are all-day comfortable. They're good bikes. It is sad they don't hold a price.

Keep storing them and give it time.  I've seen R's listed for $10k+ and I'm sure that someone, somewhere will pay it - not saying whether that is good or not.  Knowing what you have put into your bikes, parts and knowledge &experience based maintenance, makes them bargains.  It is amazing sometimes what passed for 'well maintained'.

For sh%ts & giggles this morning I read some of the gubment literature on getting an American bike over the border into Canada.  The most cogent bit of information that I read was 'hire a professional' to do the paperwork. Think I will continue to shop local  Very Happy

A coupla years back it was relatively easy. In fact my '05 K1200S is in the hands of a mate in southern BC, a beaut place called Kelowna. All we had to do was provide a printout from BMWNA showing that all of the pertinent factory recalls had been performed. As I was the parts mangler at a dealership I simply went into BMW's Great 'Puter, checked the VIN against their service records and hit print. Nowadays there is a great big red disclaimer and note saying it is VERBOTEN for dealership personnel to allow any non-employee to obtain this document. Instead, one must pay an official import and duties agent about $500 for the document that used to be free n easy.

A bloke named Vlad did test ride my RT yesterday arvo, had the money in my hands, but when he returned he said it was 'too loud' and 'not as fast' as he thought it would be. He'd just ridden an Aprilia Caponord, so go figure.

I did end up selling the all-black K1200R back in May of 2019, too. I miss the both of those bikes. But in hindsight I am glad they went to good homes. The K12R guy, who lives in Delaware, randomly sends me pictures/texts showing the outline of the bike, still in very good nick, with some sweeping view of the place where he's riding. Often it's of the Delaware Water Gap, the Catskills or Adirondack mountains. He phrases it with statements like "I Love This Bike!"
Very Happy
