My rear brake disk need replacement and the over $400. price tag is unaffordable.

Is there an aftermarket disk that will fit?

It's an 85 K100RT.

Gerry

Also, I'm in the USA

EBC, Braking and many others offer replacement discs at considerably less cost than OEM. All you have to do with some of them is drill off the rivets and bolt the original carrier on to the new disc. With EBC it's complete. No ABS ring on your model so no worries there, either. All K75, K100 and K1100 rear discs will fit your bike, again, some with slight modification.

Here's a good example:

Google is your friend. EBC's part number is MD611 and you can cross ref that to other brands. Also, do a search on the forum as there are very many requests for this very information. It's a treasure trove when the time's spent to have a squiz.

Just done my rear also. After market disks should be readitly available as they are here in OZ and its cheapest to just buy the disc and attach to your carrier. Stainless bolts with nylock nuts should be supplied to replace the rivets. Its pretty straight forward. Once I had the wheel off it only took about half an hour to get the new disc fitted. Here are a few tips.

  • Make sure you put new pads on as well. This is important.
  • Its quickest to simply cut the rivets off with a 4inch grinder fitted with a cutting disc not a grinding disc. WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES!! This only took me about 10 mins
  • Make sure you cut the rivet back off not the head. The head is on the carrier side and you don't want to damage the carrier surface whereas it won't matter if you damage the old disc.
  • Lay the carrier with old disc on a couple of pieces of wood so you can tap the rivets through with the right sized drift (3ml I think). Make sure the carrier is properly supported so you don't damage it.
  • Before attaching new disc to carrier clean all mating surfaces. Any small amount of dirt will cause the disc wobble resulting in poor braking and exessive wear.
  • Use a cross pattern to tighten up the stainless bolts. For asthetics, I put the replacement bolt heads facing out to the right side. Nuts towards the wheel.
  • The manual says you should use thread locker on carrier/hub bolts. If you do this, use it sparingly. Next time they may not come out without the heads being damged.
  • Thoroughly degrease the disc and new pads with brake degreaser before reassembly.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Thanks very mich.
I already found a supplier and I'm just shopping for price now.

One question on another subject.

Theres grease on the big plug that goes into the computer under the seat.

Is that just regular dialectric grease or something special?

It probably is dielectric grease but there need not be any there. That plug usually seals well but there is no harm leaving it there.

I have an EBC floating disc on my K1100 and it is a better disc than the original and about a third of the price.

Holister's Post 5 gives excellent advice on removing and fitting a rear disc. Like Holister I removed the old disc from the aluminium carrier by cutting the ends off each of the 10 rivets using a thin metal cut-off wheel. The steel disc then came off easily but the rivets were difficult to remove from the aluminium carrier. I was reluctant to use too much force on the rivets for fear of bending or breaking the carrier. Applying heat with a gas torch was not much help. I ended up gripping the rivet heads with vice-grip pliers and repeatedly twisting after wetting the carrier area with WD40. This freed them up but they were still too tight to safely remove. There are 2 causes for the rivets being stuck in the carrier: 1) long term corrosion caused by 2 different metals (steel and Ali.) being in contact; 2) the cut-off wheel removing the end of the rivet had slightly distorted the end of the rivet. My solution was to carefully grind the protruding rivet shaft to reduce the diameter using a small circular grinding stone in a Dremel tool. I was then able to remove the rivets.

Hi Holister

What discs did you buy for your K100. I am finally assembling mine and need to replace all three.

Thanks
