Well Saxon and I caught up the other weekend after planning a catch up for a while.  Although it has been quite a while Wells Crossing has been visited by members of the forum previously, I had not been there before.  This was my first moto trip since my crash back in May so I needed a good run just to get my confidence back.

Heading down from Brisbane there was the threat of rain still hanging around from the previous weeks flooding that hit northern NSW and southern Qld.  Apart from a couple of sprinkles, there was none to speak of although the water was still evident.  Heading west from Warwick I turned off towards Lake Coolmunda before Inglewood and headed into Texas to refuel.  From here I ventured south of the Border into Mexico and Ashford where Sean had his chair parked up at the servo.  He had a previous commitment which from his version either did not match up to expectations or if you lower the bar was what I would have expected.   Shocked

Wells Xing is about 8km south east and a public area with tables and a shelter.  A public toilet was located back in town.  At this time of year the daytime temperature is pleasant but a bit chilly at night.  When we arrived there was a couple in a caravan heading back to South Oz but the rest was ours to choose a place.  The recent rain and lots of sunshine had left the grass quite high.  That being the case best keep an eye out for the odd snake.

Wells Crossing Dscn9211

We settled down towards the bridge just to keep our distance from the others.  They had first dibs on the best firewood but there was still enough around for us to have a half decent campfire.  Just had to go for a walk.

Once set up it was time to drag out the fishing gear and try our luck.  With all the recent rain the river was still flowing strongly and the level although receding was still in flood.  Not a lot of dead water to target the local species and the colour of the water didn't help either.  Sean cast a few lures and I had a hand line. So after a while not even a nibble so time to get the fire going.

Wells Crossing Dscn9210

I had a new tent I wished to try and for the first time I had one with a decent annex.  Luxury, and as an added bonus it had a black interior.  It took a while to set up and throwing the instructions in was indeed a good idea.

We had stoves for cooking and the fire was just something to sit around and talk.  With all the greenery around there was no chance of a grass fire.  A few grogs and conversation and the night was over.  It was chilly and went below double figures, so extra clothes made the difference.

The next day was sunny and my clock was still on Qld time.  Oops, have to get up an hour earlier as the black tent interior really did its job.

After breakfast Sean was off and I dawdled and headed off an hour later.  Not having travelled through this part of the country for many a year, I decided on the scenic route back.  I decided to follow the Bruxner Hwy along the river turning north at Mingoola in the direction of Lake Glenlyon.  What a crappy road from the turn north.  As I was very close to the border, I guess funding just did not reach this little bit of the state all that often.  I decided not to visit the lake and continued on till the turn off to Gore at Pikedale.

These back roads that I had decided on were a delight to ride.  The weather was close to perfect with only a few clouds and too many undulations and twists and turns to count.  There were however many, many floodways and every second one had a couple of inches of water pass through.  A good idea to slow down, not just to enjoy the scenery but to check there were no obstructions in the water.  A couple came up a bit too quick as the numerous crests hid them well.  The deepest one at Macintyre Brook had six inches of water but was clear.  All a reminder of the recent flooding.

Wells Crossing Dscn9212

When I turned off the road here onto the road to Gore, I found my first cattle grid and a small gravelly road.  As the sign said, Cattle Ahead.  And goats, and more goats, and then some goats.  There were also cattle, kangaroos, an emu (dead, thankfully), a snake out for a suntan and others as well.  I slowed a few times just to ensure I didn't have a confused one jink in front of me.

Wells Crossing Dscn9213

Now I have a thing about goats.  They are, apart from emus the most unpredictable animal I have ever encountered on a road.  Whist driving in Botswana I learnt just how unpredictable they are.  Travelling around the 140km/hr mark in the middle of nowhere, they were always in the vicinity of a village and in packs of 20 to 30 animals.  There is always one leading the group and the rest of the dumb f**kers just keep ... following.  Now they always appeared to be walking near the road and then .... zoooom.  They have decided to cross the road in front of you just as you arrive.  So the safe thing was to decelerate rapidly and avoid any damage to your ego or the vehicle.  And breathe.

Fortunately this was just a road through someones property and I soon hit the bitumen again.  A little south of Gore I stopped to stretch the legs at a community hall.  When I hit the highway I stopped for a bite and to refuel.  Nothing beats a Chiko roll and a milkshake.  It always amazes me that the price of fuel remains constantly cheaper in rural areas and the city prices jump up and down !

Turning off the highway again I headed into Leyburn and onto the mighty Condamine River.  I anticipated with all the recent rain it would be a splendid sight indeed, or so I thought.  Either the sign was missing, it has moved or the creek that I crossed was the disappointment I was searching for.  Hey, ho, on we go.  Took the back road into Warwick and the rest of the ride home was uneventful.

It was good to be back in the saddle after a long break and apart from a couple of niggles the 75S worked as advertised.

Yes, the fishing was excellent and I sure do enjoy cold beans.

At the moment I don't have a lot of time for longer rides and trips away, so an overnight ride up to Ashford is a great little getaway for me. Am thinking of popping up there again towards the end of January, before I....

Sorry... all those pics seem to be having a little lie down. Don't know how to fix that..

Anyway, it's a good spot there, as a few other forum members would agree. I think it was Smithy who first took us there.

Yes Guys, it's a nice camping spot. Good to hear you are back out and about Tackler. How did the poor little 650 brush up after the unplanned lie down on the way back from Bathurst?

Also good to see the Tim machine still getting you about up that way Sean.

Cheers

Gaz,

The 650GSD survived better than I did.  Some scratches, bruising and a couple of broken bones and was still in a ride able condition.  I have a few new and second hand clothes for her and she needs a new insurance policy before I let her out to play again.  Thy even paid me for the privilege.  Battery still holds charge and rego due later in the month.  Cloning a new tail for her courtesy of GB777.

Yep, this is a nice camping spot for sure. Tackler, I have had a different experience with goats who in my limited encounters with them, seem to be much smarter than
kangaroos, emus and pigs. Goats, when grazing on the side of the road hear you coming and scamper into the bush away from the road. Maybe African goats have a different
cultural outlook than the Australian version.
Good to see you out and about son.
Cheers Tom

Well,

We have decided to return to Wells Xing next month for a stay of two nights.  So those of you who are interested, the dates chosen are Sunday 22 & Monday 23 January 2023.  These dates were chosen because the following Thursday is the Ozzie Day public holiday and we have no idea how popular the location will be over that long weekend.  Those of you that are still forced to work to support us pensioners where everyday is a Saturday, stiff biccies.

It will be totally BYO and the following facilities are available:
  • one shelter with a table
  • one outside table
  • two self standing barbeques
  • one creek that is hopefully back to normal
  • a large area with ample room for throwing up a tent

Nearby in Ashford there is a general store, a servo and most importantly a public toilet.  Sean is looking at some areas for a ride and possibly a pub lunch.

Suggestions for entertainment are:
  • alcohol
  • swimming (no crocodiles)
  • fishing tackle
  • a sense of humour
  • I might even throw in the Backgammon set

It can be expected to be hot and hopefully there is not a fire ban.  I expect the council will have cut the grass since our last visit and cannot remember if there is phone reception or not.

Initial interest appears to be a couple from Brisbane and from the Newy Krew.  You can make your own way there and if you have a map and know how to read it along with road signs then hopefully you will not get lost.  The ride in west of the NE Hwy is not challenging.

So, stay a night, stay two or don't stay at all.  Or don't even turn up.

You have been warned  Smile

I'll be along on some kind of velocipede combination.

As Herr von Täckler says, Wells Crossing is a back to basics place to go and camp. No facilities to speak of, though it is in fact only 8km from Ashford where there are amenities.  Ashford itself has its service station, which has recently been refurbished and re-opened. It has road food and I believe there is some alcohol in the fridge these days( though probably not a great selection...no '84 Grange or  Bin 707, I wouldn't think) There is a takeaway up the street and Ashford also has a club where take away drinks are available. As far as I know, the pub remains closed.

Possible short day rides include:

Wells Xing to Glenlyon dam and then a loop up to the Stanthorpe-Texas rd and across to Texas for lunch. Lunch possibilities include the Stockman's hotel, or a take away place just up the street. ( then back to Ashford via Bonshaw... a loop of approx 250km.

A variation on that would be to do Ashford-Glenlyon-Texas and then down to Graman pub for lunch via Yetman and Wallangra (not Wallangara) that would make a loop of around 300km.

All depends on how far people want to ride for a day ride of course, and there are other possibilities in all directions. Pindari dam is close by but maybe tooo close.

The routes I have selected present the best possibilities of encountering sealed roads. There are loads of dirt back roads between places as well if that's your thing. ( if I'm on the HD, I have already broken two shock bolts on bad dirt roads towing the chair about and am reluctant to spend days getting broken softail shock bolts out...again.)

All other suggestions welcome.

Depending on how many people decide to come along, we can contact places in regards to lunch bookings.

I'm sure I can get lost without the help of the group....much more fun when its somebody else's fault though.

Pretty much highway all the way I think.

See who else is coming - happy to ride in group or just meet up at Ashford or campsite if suits better.

Leave in your capable hands.

So…… Tackler & Sean, my interpretation of the plan is to arrive at Well’s Crossing on Sunday for overnight camp, a bit of a tour loop on Monday, camp overnight again and then wend our way home on Tuesday.
I like the location so I’ll have a serious talk to myself about getting the time off and hope to see you there.

Cheers

just a heads up ..
as seanii and tackler would know , the lamb and potatoe festival is on the same weekend over the 2 days 21st and 22nd
so if coming through Guyra , might be a place to explore , along the path to ashford , which would be about an hour and a half away  if heading to tinga , inverell then to ashford from Guyra.

had our first 30 + degree day here since last February  , still quite cool nights around the 8-12 degrees , but should be warmer tonight , at last ....

but dont be surprised if there is frost in the am,  if the weather changes

cheers , see you there

Tackler, I had that very conversation with the gentleman this afternoon and he is going to consult his social diary. I think he is like myself in regard to camping - will take hard cover accommodation over the tent if available but will tent if the circumstances call for camping.

I’ll be happy if the cooler nights that Charlie referred to are still around in a couple of weeks.

Cheers

I broke a shock bolt on the Hardly Driveable for the second time recently, on another dirt road. There's a learning curve there for me in regards to HD softail suspension, sidecars and ride height adjustment....but I mean... who came up with the idea of  having your suspension lying down horizontally?? Hmm.. Might have been Vincent... Really MUST get the K100 outfit finished for these kinds of rides. Anyway, I think I may have it sorted now, which means I'm good to go in regards to Wells Crossing.

Sidecars are useful for many things, including carrying dogazoids, beer and firewood, and prompting pointless and nostalgic conversations with old men about back in the good old days when men were men, sheep were nervous and little furry creatures from Betelguese were REAL furry little creatures from Betelguese etc etc. Oh wait.. that's me... I'M the old man aren't I... but I'm sure those other old men are just... well, older.

Ashford and Wells Crossing are not Guyra or Glen Innes, as a quick look at your phone's weather app will soon disclose. This means we are more likely to have very warm days and pleasant evenings, with the chance of thunderstorms at this time of year.

What was I talking about....? Oh yes, firewood. I'll bring some firelighters, kindling and a few pieces of hard wood to keep a fire going for a bit. There isn't a lot of firewood lying about at Wells Crossing, so any donations picked up along the way would be useful.

Looking forward to catching up with friends, and meeting other members for the first time.

Schoorn.

Local knowledge question for young Saxon7. Do you know if the route from Bukkulla direct to Wells Crossing via The Pocket Road and Bukkulla Road is sealed?

Or is it better to just go straight up to Ashford from Inverell and then out to the campground? I can't remember which road I took leaving Wells Crossing last time we camped there.

Cheers

Gaz,
Charlie's right about the unsealed bits. The road from Emmaville across to Bukkulla is patchy at the best of times. There hasn't been a lot of rain in recent weeks apart from some storms, but you can still expect some residual water and flood damage on most of the roads around the area, be they dirt or tar. Most roads have causeway/floodways along them and these can make for some interesting interludes when you find the bottom missing from the causeway etc. Still, there's nothing that the alert and attentive ride will have any trouble with.

Sean.

I will never have enough brownie points to get to that one.

Good run. Thanks Tackler and Saxon for arranging and introducing me to this spot. Definitely worth a second visit and a pleasant 1/2 day run from Brisbane.

Left Brisbane 6am went via Cunninghmas Gap, Warwick, Inglewood, Texas, Ashford. Was in Ashford before lunch with one refuel and a couple of smokos and a maiden roadside coffee with new stove . Found the site with a bit of help from some locals. Lovely quiet spot next to the river.

Tried out a few new 'toys' on this trip. Have finally retired the hexamine stove and bought a Furno gas cannister unit - worked brilliantly and heaps cheaper than the Jetboil. Also the Airlite air mattress recommended by Martin worked well and much smaller to pack - a bit narrow but comfortable....Still working on a decent pillow.

Saxon, Tackler, Tom, Gaz, Charlie lobbed up through the arvo and camp was pitched. Enjoyed looking at everybody's 'camping' setup and various gizmos/mods. Very impressed with my first look at Gaz's 'K75 Country' brick.

Bit of wisdom aired around the fire and an early night.

Charlie led a ride to nearby dam  (another good camping spot) in the morning.  I could only stay one night, so I left the fellas to their day ride and did a leisurely pack up and left for home around lunchtime. Made good time on largely empty roads.

Bike ran well, no hiccups...also didn't fall off.

Tried to attach a couple of pics, but the 'host an image' button is bringing up a blank popup for some reason.. Hopefully others have better luck

Great to catch up with some of the K Krew at this spot. Good campsite. Thanks to Tackler and Sean to get this going. Gaz and I got a bit wet on the way up but it's only water anyway. As Mick we solved the world's problems around the fire and over a couple of drinks. Cheers Tom

Always good to have a catch up. I like Wells Crossing and the surrounding countryside and roads. I'd never been to Glenlyon dam before either.

Thanks for the company up at Wells Crossing you 5. Good camping spot and nice spread of locations with Tackler and Mick67 from Brisbane, Charlie from Glen Innes, Saxon7 from Guyra, Tommy from Newcastle and me from up the valley at Pokolbin.

As Tom commented we got a bit wet, which actually means we got drenched on the section between Raymond Terrace where we met up and Gloucester where we had a coffee break. The climb up the range to Walcha yielded very little rain but was replaced by dense fog until we hit the top of the plateau. Beautiful riding from then on.

Lunch was had at Walcha and we headed north west through Uralla, Bundarra and into Inverell for our final fuel stop. The short run up to Ashford from there passed without incident and we arrived at the camp site around 4:15pm having put about 530km under the wheels.

Tackler got the fire organised and we settled in for an evening of friendly banter and a couple of drinks to lubricate the throats telling the stories.

Next morning we set off together for a short run to Pindari Dam which is much bigger than I expected and another possible camp site. As Mick67 was only staying one night he peeled off to our camp site to pack up for his homeward run in the afternoon.

On the trip to Glenlyon Dam I managed to misinterpret Charlie's instructions so Tom and I ended up over the border into Queensland to Texas where we had a pleasant lunch while the other 3 enjoyed a view of Glenlyon Dam and had a later sitting for lunch at Texas. Anyway we 5 ended up back at the campsite for another pleasant evening.

The line up at Pindari Dam.

Wells Crossing A87fea10

As Tom and I had a full day of riding to get us home we packed up earlier than the last 3 and hit the road about 7:45 am (NSW time). Breakfast in Inverell then retraced our track down to Gloucester after lunching in Walcha. Last fuel and goodbyes between Tom and I at Gloucester as we each headed for home. I got into my garage about 4:15pm.

Lets hope we can manage a good number of K Forum catch up gatherings in 2023.

Cheers

a pic of the pool at Wells crossing , early in the morning, was just great to sit in the serenity and quiet of the starting day

Wells Crossing 20230113

west of Glenlyon dam, the road back to Texas was dirt on this branch , perhaps 20 kilometers before tar restarted for another 30 ks back to lunch . i think the "shearers way" which branched off before the dam wall , is tar back to the texas - stanthorpe road , that we thought we would traverse , although longer than this ...erm shortcut .

heres Seanii and Tackler arriving at the tar , along the path

Thanks Bob,
it's a good spot, well worth a visit I think. Maybe something for a more regular event for those who don't mind minimalist facilities. Very Happy
