Hello everyone,

Pleased to be part of the forum. This year I picked up a 1988 K100RS that the previous owner had neglected outdoors for 4 or 5 years. I'm getting it back into riding-condition.

I lurked the forums previously and found very useful advice already. For example, my fuel tank cap lock wouldn't open -- some threads here helped me overcome that issue! Cheers all, looking forward to getting my flying brick running!

I'll post a few pics of work I've done on the K100RS so far

Fuel tank cap: The lock was toast. Drilling a hole to reach the bolt sort of worked, but the bolt was rusted so badly it wouldn't pull back easily. Luckily I forced the lid open without damaging the tank. Then I had to remove four screws fastening the cap to the tank. They were so rusty that any bit immediately stripped the heads. I had partial success with a screw extractor bit set I got for $14 on Amazon. It ripped the screw heads off and left the threads in the tank, but that was enough to get the cap off.

Took mine to bike week last week. She got a lot of looks but was mostly Harleys.

Those Special Edition RS's looked sharp. Too bad the previous owner neglected it, leaving it outside. Hopefully it cleans up into a head-turner for you.

A definite project. 1st owner of my K100RS let it sit in a garage (luckily) for 10 years. Replaced just about everything rubber but in hindsight I would have also changed the steering head bearings. I found out what a thrill a tank slapper was one day... 

I had a rusted screws in my gas cap retainer ring also. Thread re-tapped but iffy, so I put in longer screws (and anti-seize). I could measure the longer ones if you like.

I am based in Baltimore but my bike garage is in the College Park / Greenbelt area.

Agreed! I actually just have a regular K100RS with same paint job.

I'm not familiar with thread restoration so I'm kind of confused what this means. Did you drill out the original screws then try re-tapping the holes? I could definitely use advice on that.

No advice on getting them out other than I  soaked my 1 stuck screw with penetrating fluid over night and used a good amount of downward pressure as I unscrewed it as not to strip the phillips head. Corrosion made the thread hole a bit funky so I cleaned up the threads with an original size tap it and used a "tad" longer screw to get to the the threads that weren't damaged while sitting in contact with the original length screw.

Original screw length total = 10mm.

Just measured and I have 13mm length screws

The first thing to do is clean out the Phillips head with a tack or dental pick or whatever to ensure that the screwdriver head gets all of the way in. Then, as you suggest, use a GOOD Phillips screwdriver with lots of downward pressure.

I replace my gas cap screws with stainless hex screws.




To get even better anti head strip protection you could use Torx screws.
