I recently replaced the rear master cylinder and discovered a couple hoses that were split in the process. Can someone help me determine the part numbers for these two hoses? One goes from the rear master to the ABS and the other goes from the ABS to the rear caliper. Bike is a 1991 K100 RS. Just want to make sure I purchase the right ones. Thanks in advance!

You want to replace and upgrade to braided stainless brake lines by Spiegler.  It's the best upgrade you can make.  Not much more expensive that OEM.

+1 on Spiegler brake lines. While mine seemed okay and didn't have issues, I upgraded to Spiegler braided lines.

So if I was to replace the four brake hoses on a non-ABS 1987 K100 RS it would cost 755 dollars Canadian before shipping costs. I find that expensive!

That's taking the piss. Is there any law in Canada preventing you from making your own? I believe your southern neighbours frown upon the practice.

There might well be a prohibitive law here in Canada Dai but they'd be hard pressed to enforce it.  The parts are all readily available online and making your own is easily done (or so my car racing bubbies tell me).  I do know that industrial shops making hydraulic hoses here in Ontario won't touch brake lines.  These guys were great when I needed new brake lines for the RT.

A pair of BMW oem rubber hoses (34 32 2 311 325,  34 32 2 311 324) will give you all the braking you need and will set you back approximately 165CAD from an outfit like MaxBMW in the US. The rubber hoses on my moto were working well at 22 years old. I replaced them with oem hoses on the general principle that 20 years usage was enough. The extra two years usage was for the thrill. Laughing

Flush the brake system thoroughly yearly.

Can you use field fittings for brake hoses, or do you have to get a special crimping tool?

My brake hoses still look good although from 1985, so I shouldn't really leave them on the to-do list.

@Shep,  if you're in the market for replacement braided brake lines, there is a Canadian supplier on Ebay that I can recommend. I bought replacement lines for my K75 from him.  He works out of Toronto but will do shipping; I picked up at his shop.  He'll build completely to order using Apex parts.  The quality of his work is top notch and turn around is very quick.  His Ebay handle is coastguard1975.

I appreciate the suggestions from everyone. Thanks for the link Point-Seven-five and the part numbers Laitch. I contacted the guy on eBay that robmack recommended so we'll see what ends up being the cheapest option. I will definitely take your advice and upgrade to stainless. Thanks again!

Was his shop in Scarborough Robmack?  Pretty sure this was where mine came out of when I ordered them through the link that I posted above.  If I remember correctly, the rear line was about $22 before shipping (a few years ago now).  I ordered the lines though the same link.

Yes, his shop is in Scarborough.  I know that the quality of the parts and assembly was top notch and the price reasonable.

Thank you for the Canadian connection robmack.
I also get upset with the additional cost of tracking, expedited shipping (which I seldom need), customs duties and sometimes an additional handling charge when I import from the US.

How to make your own brake hoses.

Just passing along a PM'd DIY.

Type - YouTube - How to make Stainless Steel braided brake lines the RIGHT way - by Andy Mechanic.

Maybe someone will post the video, don't remember how to do it.

For US-based riders who wish to make their own hoses relatively inexpensively and easily, try your favourite motorbike shop. Get them to open their Tucker Powersports 2021 Street catalogue (catalog) to THIS PAGE

There you will find various braided hose lengths & banjo fittings with several angles from the Goodridge brand for not a lot of dosh and custom made by you, and you'll be laughing. Tucker has at least seven warehouses scattered round the US in major cities so the wait time isn't terrible. You can't buy directly from them as they are a supplier to the trade. That's why I recommend your local powersports shop. Tucker is one of the big three suppliers along with Parts Unlimited/Parts Canada & WPS or Western Powersports.

Roll yer own. Bob's yer uncle.

For anyone who wants to get rid of that damn stupid splitter in the headstock (is my opnion on it anyway!), you need two 40-degree banjos for the calipers and two 20-degree banjos for the master cylinder, plus, of course, a double banjo bolt. If you tweak the nuts just right at the top, you can get both banjos to lie together. Unfortunately they won't produce babies because they both have nuts Twisted Evil Very Happy

Got my lines from Melvin, they're cheap, and good for TUV (like MOT in some countries).

Have a look at the HEL Performance website at https://us.helperformance.com/motorcycle

They have websites for UK & Oz as well.

I’ve used their product on 3 bikes and have been very happy. On my K1100 I used the kit but on the others I did a custom order with their online tool, working out the length by running a length of 1/4 inch plastic tubing along the path I wanted, mark it and then pull out and measure.
+1 on Dai’s comment on using 2 lines directly from the master cylinder using a double banjo.

Cheers
