It's on the hit-list - along with the Eleffantreffen. That at the moment is planned for 2016, along with the Simmer Din.

Well, the Elefantentreffen is for crazy Bavarians - nothing to do with those lunatics wearing leather pants (apart from a two-legged Bavarian beer keg I call "Dad" Smile )

To put joking apart, I don't think I'll ever be that hardcore - not to mention the once-off expense of the gears which I would probably only use once a year.

TBH I don't even know what I would need there but I can picture February in Snowdonia... On my PR3 tyres it sounds suicidal Smile  Support wheels???

Winter clothing is not a problem for vikings but I have neither studded tyres nor snow chains; also the wife is just getting used to the bike in (more or less) normal conditions, dunno how she would react to such extremities.

Conwy is on my hit list as part of a Welsh trip to take in Bethesda, Betys y Coed, Llangollen and a few narrow gauge steam train runs like Blenau Ffestiniog. Preferably in some warmer weather. There is a lovely place in Conwy called Bodnant and then there is the Great Orme.

I have been there many times in snow and ice and its actually awesome in winter, provided its snow and not rain. Best way of describing Welsh rain is 'Kerry rain without the wind'.

A Welsh weekend is simmering under the radar, has been discussed off forum as a two nighter trip, early Friday ferry and back Sunday afternoon/night. Suitable camp sites also identified to pitch for 2 nights.

At the moment my dates are hard to fix because work is on a contract basis.

@Björn: the Dragon Rally is no longer really hardcore. The improvement in motorcycles, motorcycle clothing and camping technology have made it easier year on year. Thirty years ago it was absolutely another story when

1. Will my bike break down?
2. Will I stay dry?
3. Will I stay warm?

were all very pertinent questions. The Dragon was always a 5-600 mile round trip from where I lived in Dorset and being penniless early-twenty-somethings, (1) was always a distinct possibility. My first Dragon was done on a Suzuki GT380 equipped with non-stick tyres, a £20 tent from Argos (a fortune back then!) and two sleeping bags (one inside the other) for warmth.

@Olaf: Beware the cattle grids on the Great Orme. They're really well placed on the steepest part of the ascent/descent... Recently the Welsh Highland and the Blaenau Ffestiniog lines linked up, so there's the possibility of an eighty mile round trip by narrow gauge steam. By some real irony I've spent more time in Wales in the winter than in the summer! Shocked

That's some link up on the steam trains. I suppose we can become trainspotters for a while? That makes a really good Wales trip for me anyway. Wonder now could we get  few Ks on that one??

Very true about technology and camping gear. Never had a bike failure apart from one time I chanced a CD175 with a tight chain on a Cork to Dublin trip 170 miles and it parted outside a pub near my destination. Very fortunate. Bike n camp gear was another era though. I now use bike all year and winter iding is just an extra few minutes wrapping up and staying dry.

Will talk to 88ke n this! too gd to miss in summer.

I missed that one. I fell off my girlfriend's Honda CM250 three days before the rally. I didn't hurt myself much nor did I do any damage to the bike but I bruised my knees something fierce and couldn't fold up on the bike.

Before you ask - yes I did do the 1985 one...!

Normally it's a four day run for me because I cross on the 08.00 or the 08.30 ferry from Dublin port on the Thursday and then ride down to Bronllys, Bath or Poole to meet up with friends. Whichever place I stop at overnight, we all meet up on Friday morning and ride back up to North Wales. I miss the long round trip from Poole and doing it this way is the only way I can get a decent ride in. Home direct to the Dragon and back is rarely more than 240 miles and if the rally is on Anglesey, the distance can drop to as little as 200 miles. That distance just feels like a cheat.

Das ist just ein localised early froste. Ve haff vays of making you feel at home.

Is the Dragon Rally becoming an Irish Eccentrics winter outing? I think February is about he only month I have never camped in.

Well... we don't quite have the wide open spaces and freedom to pitch up anywhere that you guys have, so numbers have to be limited. Plus, you really, really, really don't want me to get into the utterly stupid H&S rules surrounding motorcycle rallies. Or their rules on picking my nose before breakfast. H&S get into everything whether they're needed or not.

You'd better stop mixing the languages - my daughters do it many times, moulding 3 languages together, it is simply terrible Smile Trying to get them out of that habit.

Let's put it this way - I had to choose between scraping the ice from the windscreen or using the bike. I felt too lazy so opted for latter....

Still very concerned about camping in February especially as I just don't have decent camping gears. A cheap kind of tent and 2 basic sleeping bags - that's normally more than enough for the amount of time I spend exposed to the elements Smile

Camping in February doesn't trouble me. Have done it over Christmas and woken more than once to a rock hard tent or one covered in snow. But, apart from the need to keep warm, as in one sleeping bag inside the other, is the need to keep the body warm and dry and bike safe in icy conditions. The top of Wales can get seriously icy.

I can put it in as a potential but would not bother booking a ferry until the day of travel. Its kind of looking like I might be back out of the country for a while.

Have you got the  book 50 Years of the Dragon Rally? If not then order straight away.   http://www.amazon.com/The-Dragon-Motorcycle-Rally-History/dp/0957598408. You can then check my user name and relate to two stories in the book. There is a new book due at the 2015 rally. Probably see you there.

Bought it on-site at the 50th Very Happy. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more on the 1985 rally, considering just how bad the weather really was.

A nice story behind my 1985 rally badge: I lost mine somewhen around 1995. Bearing in mind how rare they are and the stupid money they command on ebay (Why? If you weren't there..?), I despaired of ever getting a replacement and I stopped wearing all of the others. So, anyway, whenever I remembered, as an absolute forlorn hope I took to asking the Conwy members if there were any of the original 1985 badges left. Of course there weren't - except that at the last rally on the Mona racetrack I was shocked when the lady sitting next to Graham Bradshaw said 'yes'. In the boot of her car was a large bag of spare badges, but the 1985 one was in a bag with just a few others. It was her recently-deceased husband's 1985 badge and as she was well aware of how much those badges meant to the people that made the rally, she was very happy for me to have it.

Treasured - oh, yes. Worn - NO!!!

As a group, we're easy enough to spot at the rally (if finding any group in that lot is easy). We usually fly two flags; Lenin (so what's new?) but above that, a home-made one that says 'Old enough to know better' in blue on white. It's seen better days.

I have absolutely no idea why we started flying that flag and I don't think anyone else can remember now - it's been going up for well over a decade and has become one of our Dragon Rally traditions.

Must have been just about the last batch out. I got mine about ten days ago and the rest of our group ten days before that. Their tickets are numbered in the three hundreds and mine is in the five hundreds. Seven hundreds, by any chance?

Total number available depends on the size of the site, but that can't be far short of the final number.

1300!!!

No, that's not for me. I did a few Dragons in the '60s, but, for me, the best rallies are 20 to 30 campers with a common interest, BMW's, Vincents and/or sidecars.

Two weeks ago that number were sitting around a bonfire, (big logs up to 15" diam), in a wood south of Stevenage; great weekend, you're all mates together with small numbers.
Off to north Yorkshire tomorrow to join the Viking sidecar club's camping w/e, my 29th rally this year.  sc3

Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy your 2015 Dragon and, with a bit of luck you might even meet up!

Paul.

Went to a smaller one in Conwy last year (think it was called bike fest)which was really good but it was cancelled this year due to lack of interest which was a shame. My K nearly won cleanest European bike (it was the only one entered until some b****** entered a silly GS). There was live music in a tent with a bar and met some really nice people.

Thought id do a little write up of the dragon rally, me and snod spent Friday night in a Travelodge in colwyn bay, spent the evening in a pub drinking pitchers of alcohol and eating food and witnessing wales being beaten by England in the rugby :p the next morning snod had a slightly sore head but mine was fine!

we were just down the road from the check in point near the castle at Conway, weather was nice, sun was shining and not massively cold. Got our tickets drawn on and a map to the site (which had been changed at the last minute) we also got directions from a welsh man who couldn't believe we had never heard of betsy-coed (some one being astonished with a welsh accent always tickles me). We rode to the site down some really nice roads, there was bikes everywhere, turned a corner and saw a mountain covered in snow, which we then started to head towards!

Got to the site around 11 and managed to get a decent spot as it wasn't too busy yet, there was one strip of tarmac but the rest of it involved off road work! We managed to get a flat(ish) spot in a nice location, near the burger van, the markee thing and the loos (but not so close as to be mistakenly peed on!) and close to the tarmac as we were both on heavy bikes! We put the tent up without arguing and then went to find some food (leaving snods k to guard the tent, he rode pillion on mine). We stopped at a nice pub and I had lasagne and snod had beef goulash. We went to find supplies (chocolate, biscuits and alcohol) and snod was outraged to find they charge by the unit so the nasty cheap beer was actually £10 for four cans!

we went back to the site which was now getting busier and I rode my fjr across the mud with no wheel spin! We saw a poor k shackled to a side car and forced to pull a massive trailer, I was all for rescuing it but snod wouldn't let me. Snods friend Paul then turned up on his trials bike thing and had brought beer so all was good. I then had to turn snods bike around for him, pushing the k on the mud so it was facing the road while him and his friend looked on :p

the drinking started early and we wandered around the site and then met up with Dai (who's bike badly needs a wash, almost as badly as snods) who shared some lovely whiskey with us and was telling snod exactly how he should go about fixing bikeys clutch :p

we ended up drinking in the marquee and listening to the band, I was wearing my corset (for warmth obviously!) there was a slight incident where snods glasses got stood on, but they were fine, just a bit wonky! The night was freezing and when I got up for a wee around 4am there was a thick fog all around and it looked really eerie. The air bed also gave up the ghost during the night so we ended up on the floor.

in the morning there was ice on the outside of the tent but the burger van was serving bacon butties and coffee, so everything felt a little better. So many bikes needed bump starting, there was a continuous line of people pushing them!

really enjoyed my first dragon rally and looking forward to many more!

Dai's bike doesn't need a wash, THAT is an organic, protective, live culture he is experimenting with for the benefit of bike owners everywhere Razz

Ha, you need modern technology.

We use whiskey, that will make the dirt disappear. Even better is you can do it by remote control, sitting inside a pub. After a while the imagined dirt disappears.

Dai is a man who takes after my own heart, cleaning is totally unnecessary except for when it is time to sell a bike. Anyway, this thread is of course worthless without pics!

The Conwy MCC car park for sign in:

2015 Dragon Rally SVIPTDv

Not long after arriving, wondering where the other guy was..

2015 Dragon Rally GTxbWXx

A hint at the number of trikes present:

2015 Dragon Rally TQy8Q8b

The enormous FJR on its plinth:

2015 Dragon Rally AKi0mhz

And the freezing cold morning after, where fears of a muddy offroading experience quickly dissipated as the ground was frozen solid..

2015 Dragon Rally H7c2cL3

2015 Dragon Rally VqKRKXD

2015 Dragon Rally S9P2cWX

All in all thoroughly enjoyable, though I'm not sure if I'd do 30 on the trot like some strange people :suspect:

I have always disagreed, spent time with a guy who before he went on any long trip would meticulously clean his bike. I was teasing him about it one day and he said he did that as his way of checking out every little thing before a long trip and that even with good maintenance it would often show up something because you effectively were checking every little thing..

Last year after our trip to France and heading off for a camping weekend a few weeks later I was doing exactly that and cleaning off the front axle pinch bolts. Noticed one was backed off about 6mm. I had done head bearings early May before France, checked everything was ship shape which it was, then found that. I have never worked out how, but that's what I found. In times past found a missing split link clip on a chain drive.....screw in a tyre, brake fluid leak, little things you only spot when up close and personal.

exactly! With bikey it was ooo look at that hole, I think there may have been a bolt in there once.... With the fjr its this plastic is so nasty and wobbly unlike the strong firmness of the ks bodywork.... Also when its clean you can see the bits that need the wd40!

Don't let the layer of dirt fool you. I very rarely polish my bikes and I quite frequently don't wash them from one month to the next but I'm meticulous in maintenance. Last time LFB was washed was the Friday before the Dragon for a tyre change and a maintenance check. However, by the time I got to the Dragon I'd clocked 520 miles on salt and sh!t covered roads which did make for a spectacularly thick covering of muck.

The whiskEy was a 10 year old single malt Tyrconnel; very flavoursome and very smooth.

What Becky failed to mention when it came to parking the FJ is that she despatched Snod to pull a flat rock out of the nearest stream. Good thinking, that girl!

I did try to persuade Snod that separating the frame from the engine was a relatively easy job but I don't think he was convinced.

It's no surprise the ground was frozen solid. There's a MetOffice reporting station in Capel Curig which showed -3C for both Friday and Saturday night. Bearing in mind that's measured inside a Stevenson box (absolutely still air), the minus 8C and minus 9C readings I got from sensors mounted in bikes on site were probably closer to the 'real' temperature. Fat lot I cared - I was good and warm! The sunrise on Sunday morning was quite spectacular; utterly blue skies with a few wisps of pink cirrus cloud and a nearly full moon.
