Yes it's me again, asking another question about part numbers because I can't find the info on RealOEM.

Does anyone know the part number for Item #16 in the below image? It's a sort of vibration damper that fits between the tank and the frame. It's missing on my bike (So I can't just look at the part to find the part#).

More generally, please share your tips for tracking down these "grayed out" parts that RealOEM and MaxBMW don't want me to know about! Is it just that the actual part number has been lost to time? Is it that these parts don't have a part number at all?

Searching under the K75 models doesn't show that gasket (but you know that). But look under the K100 model and you find item 16 is part number 16 11 1 453 063. This suggests it is not used on the K75 models


If you then put that number in the search option in the main menu, then it only shows it as used on the K100. That's the reason you don't see the part number in the K75 section (they use generic diagrams across models).


If you put the last 7 digits of your VIN in the main menu it will return specific information for your machine.

Mystery solved! Thanks Mike!

I did put in my serial number (that's why this part number was grayed out, I suppose). Looks like I can live without this part.

Its an important part in terms of keeping heat under control, especially in hot temperatures. It also helps protect under tank electrics from rain and winter weather so don't leave it out.

Well that's what I thought, but it looks like I'm not "leaving it out" if it was never standard on K75 bikes (or at least not mine). Meh. Maybe I'll pick one up on eBay now that I have the part number, and see if it fits.

This thread made me wonder about my K75RT, so I had to go out and look at it.  It doesn't have that big rubber gasket visible at he headstock so I'm inclined to think it's not there.  Looking at my k100's, they both have the gasket.  

One thing a quick look revealed is that the space between the tank and the headstock is slightly different between the K75 and the K100.  It may be that there is no need for the gasket, or possibly that it doesn't fit due to the different frame geometry used to accommodate the shorter 3 cylinder engine.

Further investigation(I really have way too much time on my hands) reveals that the K100RS models have a different tank P/N from the K75/100 RT/LT models, and that the part number of the tank is what connects to the "Gasket" on the frame.  

Depending on the tank on your bike, it appears the gasket isn't really necessary and may not even fit.

I have seen it on 2 K75 bikes that I helped friendly K tech out.......he needed an alternator on one and fuel pump on the other and I have long ago become his first call for parts. Have an arrangement he can have them and just orders replacements but saves someone time off the road. Bot those 2 K75 did have those 'cushions' under the tank.

I suspect the "cushion" is specific to a particular tank/model.  It would be good to know exactly which model bike the original poster has.

My hunch is that some models have larger capacity tanks and the extra capacity came from the space the "cushion" occupies.  As in the RT/LT "touring" oriented models.

Looking at the parts fiche, the K75,100,and 1100 RT/LT models don't have the "cushion" and have different part numbers for the tank from the K100,1100 RS models that do have the "cushion".

Keep in mind that despite a family resemblance among K bike tanks, there are, at least, several different part numbers that are used on different models.  They are not all the same, something I learned the hard way with an eBay purchase a couple years ago.

My 86 K75 did not have this part. No need to be sorry, great source of information here.
