Hello everybody,

In a month or two I will be selling my '89 K100LT and buying '95 K1100RS. Being used to an excellent level of protectonwhich LT's fairing and winsdcreen offer in a bad weather, I would like to replace the very low shield/screen on RS with something both higher and wider.

Any recommendations - and sources where to get them? Preferably in Europe - as US suppliers most often don't want to ship overseas (or use moronically expensive UPS & similar instead of ordinary USPS airmail).

Cheers from Tarik in Bosnia

I would try the bike with the standard screen first if I were you. As long as you are moving that screen provides excellent protection as it was wind tunnel designed. They have a small spoiler at the top of the screen that can be adjusted to suit your height.

+1 what BobT said.
Personally, I don't see why you'd want to bother doing that for a number of reasons.
1. The windscreen is part of the upper fairing. I don't think you could change it without replacing the whole fairing.
2. In this case, if you are going to replace the windscreen and fairing you may as well just go for an LT fairing and windscreen.... why not buy a K1100LT instead of an RS. That would be the logical thing to do imo.
3. The RS is a better windshield than the LT. I have a K100RT and a K1100RS and in my experience, while the RT fairing offers slightly more rain protection, the RS fairing and windshield provides better wind management. I find the RS much quieter than the RT. But I'm 6ft tall and sit quite high in the seat on the RT. The RS has a more prone riding position so the head is a little lower and out of the wind. Even so I think the RS windshield is far more streamlined than the RT. The newer LT looks like it might do a better job though.
4. BMW went to a lot of trouble designing and wind-tunnel testing a fantastic fairing and windshield for the RS and it works well at all speeds.

I planned to install the wider handlebar from LT model, and I DO ride the whole winter too (provided there is no sno & ice on the road surface itself).

I found the US Parabellum and Airflow screens, but they are a) damn expensive, and b) shipping costs from the USA - OMG.

Aeroflow DOES have a distributor in Denmark - but while the shield costs 284 US$ in the USA, in Denmark it is 410 US$ converted.

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF MORE DISTRIBUTORS FOR THESE WINDSCREENS/SHIELDS ???

OR ARE THERE COMPARABLE EUROPEAN PRODUCTS ???

There is a very simple reason: by the law in my country (Bosnia-Herzegovina) it is only permitted to import the motorbikes that satisfy Euro 4 exhaust emissions norm at minimum - so produced from 2004 afterwards. That's why I am limited only to what can be found in the small adds locally. There ARE 2 or 3 LTs, but they either have no ABS installed, or they are badly overpriced.

I have two K 1100 RS on offer  - one from 1995 and 62 000 km on the clocks, other 1996 but with 98 000 km. The former costing ca 2 000 €, latter 1 500 €. I will most probably buy the first one

In that case you should look for a second hand complete fairing off an LT. I very much doubt that the LT handlebars are going to fit without hitting the RS fairing somewhere. The RS front fairing, handlebars and around the instruments is very compact.

Thanks, that's not a bad idea... But my buddy from Croatia who has a reputation as the best expert for BMWs in ex-Yugoslavia says it can be done - i was going to take my new bike to him anyway to complete that replacement, and he would provide the parts. If at the end it turns out NOT to be possible, then I am going to look for the whole fairing.

I would suggest riding the bike for a while before doing the LT handlebars. IMO, the stock riding position on the RS is excellent.  I have a bad back and have found the ergonomics BMW designed on the RS are excellent.

I agree on the windshield.  I own and ride daily both an RT and an RS, and find the RS has less protection from rain compared to my big RT windshield.  An aftermarket shield that is removable with those Dual Snap dots would be a good choice, allowing removal on nice days when you don't really need it.  I had a Parabellum windshield on my RT for a year and found it to be really nice.  Trouble with them is that they are pretty fragile and mine broke when it leaned against the wall in my garage.

One more thing about the Parabellum, or any add-on shield, is that the slot behind it will tend to feed rain into the space behind the fairing.

i saw that remark about the rain in other posts, think it could be solved by drilling a few small holes at the bottom. The would be practically invisible, I guess.

I bought before R 80 with narrow, sportier handlebars, and HATED them. So they were replaced with RT ones as soon as I was able to get them  lol!

Hello, i am 1.92m tall,i tried the aeroflow screen, the tallest the have, and even with k75c bars fitted, it provided great weather protection, but was so damn noisy That i eventualy sold it ( to a smaller guy)😋
BTW, i have the rt bars fitted, the work fine with the rs fairing, plenty of room,
I do like the upright riding position, but, alas,i still get the turbulence around the helmet 😦, but i i lift about 3-5 cm i am in the clear, maybe a higher seat?,it never ends 😀

Tarik, I had secdem screen on RS. It is good screen, little bit noisy at 60 kmh, but not after. Good styling too.

I have that screen on my K100RS sidecar fitted with LT bars.  It works well.

If I was doing it again, I'd use some double sided tape between the screen and the fairing as it does chafe a bit. And you do have to drill holes in the fairing to fit the screen.

Thanks Al, drilling has to be done for Airflow screens too. I would most probably go for the larger of two French:

No drilling is needed for the aeroflow screen

It looks real fine!!! The bike I am going to buy will most likely have similar colour like yours (2nd which I have in vew is metalsed blue), but I would go for light brown windshield, not clear. Well the manufacturer itself offer custom made height for added 11,96 €. Motobins at present does not have it anymore on their web site, but I have written them an e-mail to ask if it could be ordered. More likely I would go for one of German or Austrian distributors, because both Motobins and Motorworks often come up with quite expensive shipping quotes.

Yes you're right, I now read it on the Airflow page. But I have no problems with drilling the holes - the windshield will be installed as a permanent solution.

I got the reply from Motobins, they still do have the same windshield in offer, but not the wider type which interests me. So it will be ordering from SECDEM directly (if they include Bosnia or Croatia in their list), or from some German distributor.

Hello,

I noticed something unusual on the pics of bike with a sidecar here and another one posted at the Facebook K100 group.

Can someone please explain where did these non-standard lower parts of fairing came from???

That's a factory fairing lower from a K100RS. Same part on both 2V and 4V K100RS bikes.

The main fairing and mirrors are the same parts for K1100s and both 2V and 4V K100RSs.

The brackets are different but aside from that K100RS fairing lowers will "bolt right up" to a K1100RS.

Lots of parts swap around on the different Ks.  You can even put a K1100RS fairing and paralever on on a K75 if you were so inclined - like I did:
