I have the old one out, new one is hooked up to wires. If I turn the key on is the hot side supposed to go hot with just the key on? I tested power with the old pump and I read no voltage at the positive and negative wires on the old pump with the key in the on position. Is there a fuel pump specific fuse, or a relay?

You don't mention the bike type. But the fuel pump does have a fuse and does have a relay.

On some Ks the fuel pump and horn relay are interchangeable.

It won't go hot until you press the starter button. You need to include model and year of your Brick in your profile signature.
Regards Martin.

All that used to be in my signature... Anyway it's a 1985 K100RT, 86K original miles, and I am replacing the packing and such as well as the pump, filter, and in tank submersible lines....

2 valve Jetronic bikes power up the fuel pump when the start button is pressed.

The later 4 valve Motronic bikes turn on the fuel pump for two seconds when the key is turned on.

Ok, sounds good. I'll test it with the start button pressed. Will it hurt anything if I just do a quick voltage test whilst the pump is in my hand as opposed to being installed? Just for a second or three?

You can do a quick test without doing harm. However you don't want to create any sparks from either the wiring connections or from the pumps commutator. Sparks can result in a BIG BADDA BOOM. Wrapping a damp cloth around the pump may reduce the chance of blowing both you and your Brick up. Take care.
Regards Martin.

I completely drained the petrol, and even cleaned out the entire inside of my tank as well. So no fuel to go BOOM! Thanks for the warning though!

But the 4v needs the side stand up for this to happen.

I work on it on the center stand, it's always started that way.

a quick test wont harm anything
if looking for a longer test , just remember that fuel passing through the pump cools the whole thing , bearing wear could be an issue running it for long periods dry , windings also on the armature

just a heads up

The old packing for the pump mount is different than the new one...or vica verse. Is the new one the pictured one with the cut out on one side, going to be alright? Everything fits fine....

That rubber component is called the vibration damper. Because it is next to both locking tabs, it will probably provide enough tension when the unit is locked into in the assembly to prevent vibration.

Who is the manufacturer?
