Hi all,

Recently purchased an 86 K100RT. When I drained the final drive oil it had grey streaks which appeared to be grease though the oil.

There was also a clump of grey grease sitting on the drain bolt when I removed it.

Can anyone tell me where this may have come from? Final drive spline?

Some owners add molybdenum disulphide to their gearboxes and final drive. This can take the form of powder, oil or grease. This can and does separate and can sink to the lower parts of the final drive forming a sludge.
Regards Martin.

If that clump of grease is magnetic, it might be metal shavings mixed with transmission oil.

There is no way spline lube can get into the FD.
Agree with Laitch. What you have there are minute metal particles that have clumped together. The drain bolt will be magnetic to attract the particles away from the gears.
As you probably have no history on servicing, having just bought the machine, you could guess that the oil hasn't been changed for a while. Just do your servicing and keep an eye on it.

Take out the drain bolt and this stuff can be seen sitting on top of it. I use it in my Ks.
