Not the o-ring under the cap, but the rubber u-channel seal around the thermostat itself. Has anyone found a substitute? I refuse to spend £36 to find out if this RT engine runs.

If you just want to start it up to see if it runs and don't plan on running it for an extended period then I think you'd be OK without a thermostat.

That's what I'm thinking, Duck. That, or temporarily gluing it in with Threebond. If it runs I'm still going to need a new seal though.

It might be worth a try to meet the challenge of replacing a damaged thermostat gasket by applying a bead of Permatex Black Ultra—or its equivalent—to both sides and the edge of the thermostat's flange, letting it cure fully before assembly then assembling and considering it a permanent solution. Smile

Surely, a Brick motorradfahrer somewhere has done that by now and will come forward with a testimonial.

I was playing with a used radiator a few months ago and was thinking that if you put a normal O-ring behind it then that might work.  If a little coolant seeps past it then it probably wouldn't be the end of the world.

+1 That is the solution I would probably go with.

I glued it in with a good dollop of Threebond in the end. I figured that as cylinder heads get a lot hotter than coolant, the Threebond should be reasonably leakproof.

Charlie: that's got my attention. Thank you.

No luck. They don't export overseas.

Thank you for your email. Tridon Australia is an independently owned Australian company. We only distribute Tridon products throughout Australia and New Zealand. We do not have any links to the Tridon Brand or companies in other areas of the world, therefore unfortunately I cannot help you with your request. Toledo export clamps are available to be exported (there would be a minimum quantity & order value on these products).

Thank you & Regards Tridon Sales/Customer Service

Dai - Looking on eBay I note a number of sellers offering the Tridon thermostat seal refer to the seal being suitable for several different Toyota Landcruiser engines, a VW Beete engine and a 1500 VW Kharman Ghia. This could provide you with suitable alternatives to the Tridon seal. Hope this helps.

Dai on Ebay they are shown as fitting heaps of different vehicles. Mazda MX5 1.8, Mazda 2 1.5,Daewoo Kalos 1.5, Toyota Spacia 2.0, Toyota Cressida 2.0, Diahatsu Rocky 2.0 are just a few. If none of these are suitable go to OZ Ebay and type in Tridon ttg26 and it will give you more vehicle fitment choices.
Regards Martin.

In order to avoid needing one it's best not to fiddle with the thermostat in the first place.

Normally - yes. In this case I had a leaky rad with a thermostat and a non-leaky rad without a thermostat.

Rubber u-shaped edging seal (search 'rubber u seal' on oohbay, costs about five pence a kilometer) cut and stick the ends together with...something? Should survive in hot coolant.

Or spend a while on the interweb checking out the diameters of other manufacturers thermostat seals (very boring option)
