Hi,

I recently-ish purchased a 1987 K75s with 65k on the clock. I took it out for a little test run and have found the speedo to not work. Searching for solutions led me here. Will make up a cable to try K diag this week hopefully.

Everything else on the bike seems strong. Could do with some cobwebs blowing off it as I'm not sure when it was last ridden.

So hello and look forward to sharing my brick experience

Jez

Welcome to the forum, first thing to check is does the odometer work. If not check the connections under the right hand panel.

Welcome too. You can follow the wire up from the speed sensor on the final drive, just behind the rear shock mount. You only need the side panel off to get at it. My RS did that yesterday....opened the connection and cleaned the pins did it.

Hi and thanks for the advice. I've had the connector apart and looks okay, are you just sanding them in situ? Will play some soothing sine waves to it this week and check the needle moves. Would just like to get an MoT on it so I can make the most of this weather lol!

As the MOT testers don't ride the bikes (well only to perform the brake test on the rolling road), you could put it in and see if it passes. Wink

A kind of important thing to do with a new K is getting to know it intimately.

This involves taking bits off and opening and cleaning all the electrical connections and the wise even replace the fuses. On a nice day this is a real pleasure.

I would also replace the fuel hoses between the tank and injector rail, plus the radiator to expansion tank pipe, rubber vacuum pipes, vacuum caps and crankcase Z vent pipe. They are cheap and the fuel hose is 8/13mm and you get it at a Honda dealer for a fraction of the price at the BMW dealer. It doubles up as the expansion pipe too. With that done it will be pretty darn reliable then you get more confidence in troubleshooting.

Greetings Jez80

First place Id check if the speedo isn't happening is undo the bolt holding the sensor at the rear wheel diff and give it a clean.

Hi Bonzo,

Have given this a go on Sunday along with taking the speedo apart to clean the 3 pins. Everything looks annoyingly clean. Maybe the previous owner got that far too.....I haven't don't the soldering iron trick as I only have a temp adjustable one and apparently that won't work. Maybe put the front end back together, book in the MoT and take for an extended trip to the test.

Thanks for all the input, and useful list of hoses to change

Jez

If your soldering iron doesn't put off enough of a magnetic field then you can try Karamba. Look at the bottom of this page:

Yeah roight...sound advice and true..........but sometimes you have to butcher the darn thing to get it out.......then buy a used one from Motorworks for £25 because the spare you have sitting there for such occasions doesn't actually work.....I know its £25 because I put one in my K1100 last week for that very reason.

I've taken a bunch of speedo sensors out and never had to butcher one.  Put a plastic cutting edge under the back of it and rock it back and forth.
