Well, UK members may be familiar with the awesome video of a van driver getting it completely wrong at a roundabout and going airborne.

He's been sentenced today. Fined £310.

Strange, I was fined more than that for doing 85 as I left a 40 zone and entered nationals (60mph). No excuses from me - I should have been observant enough to see the camera van if I want to travel at that speed. Didn't get airborne though, and there were no other road users around either. Oh, and I didn't perform a reckless undertake at high speed either.

I do wonder.

What is an 85 pound victim surcharge? Banned for a year. There are easier ways to get a pilots licence.

They nabbed you for Low Flying and him for High Flying, Hmmm you may have to step things up a bit Chris

it's better to be surprised than to pay a fine

Is that roundabout means of saying the same thing? Van driver qualifies as a fly by night operator.

There's a surcharge levied on the offender for each victim weighing 85lbs or more, the theory being that young children tend to bounce and are overall more resilient.

Nice try Laitch, but it's actually legal jargon relating to an obscure legal case from 1785 (British law works in hilariously obscure ways - the judges all wear obvious wigs for God's sake) when the eponymous 'victims' (actually a bunch of itinerant rum smugglers) were caught and held in a pound in Jamaica, then a British colony. The poor buggers were forgotten about for a long time, whilst the lawmakers and other goodly colonials concentrated on helping themselves to the confiscated rum. When this atrocity was uncovered, many of the 'victims' were found to be suffering from malnutrition, hallucinations and a disease known as 'scrofula'. There was public outcry and, consequentially, lawyers in general were required to pay a levy from each case they took by way of compensation. This exists to this day and became known as the '85 pound victim surcharge.
When I was fined I only had to pay a 65 pound victim surcharge. Maybe the same thing happened a few years earlier too?
