Hello all

Wanted to check the valve clearences on my 86 K100 and replace the old rubber washers

I was suprised to see that the rocker cover bolts have a shoulder between the head and thread

Do I need to cut the old rubber ones off because i cant pull them pass this shoulder and then will the new ones push on pass this shoulder ?

Before i stuff them

They should be able to roll over without damage, but if they are too old and brittle the odd one might break.

The shoulder is a good idea to prevent the rubber washer from being overtightend. Some BMW cars also have them.

22 for the whole engine Charlie - 12 for the cam cover. I've just been out and counted the new set I bought because like Matt, I need to change all of the cambox rubber.

Matt: yes, the new ones will push over the shoulder. If you're worried about them catching, a smear of silicon grease is a great help. If you look at the shape of the bolt, it's designed to bottom out on the cam cap so that as Daveyson says, the pressure on the rubber is correct. There's a downside: do NOT overtighten the bolts once they bottom out because you WILL strip/shatter the cam cap threads. Screw in until they touch down and then one-eighth of a turn further. I think that equates to about eight ft/lbs but it's always done me as a rule of thumb.

Try softening the rubber with a heat gun or hair dryer. Let it cool so you don't burn your fingers. I soaked a hardened fuel filler gasket with a 50/50 mix of Rubbing Alcohol and Oil of Wintergreen it however took a long time and once left it hardened back up.
Regards Martin.

Stick a blunt screw driver between and lever over the shoulder, doesn't matter if they break, you're renewing anyway.
