It wasn't easier to find an already stripped bike to cafe away on?
Perhaps these mint parts will find a new lover somewhere.

The kid I bought all the 1988 K100 RS body parts from was bragging to me that he paid 2000 US for it and when he's finished doing whatever it is he's doing it will be worth almost 10000 US . I just smiled and took the all those parts for the price of a set of mirrors !

Coffee bikes seem to have an aversion to trees and the open road.

I have a 86RT in Detroit. I might be interested, but I think you're keeping the parts I want (don't see them in the pics), or they won't fit a 86? I was interested in the ducktail. Maybe the radiator coverzonex wrote:Hey guys I'm cafe-ing my newly bought 85 k100. So I have lots of mint condition stock parts for sale. You're correct that an '83 through '85 rear cowl (and its seat) are different from '86 on models. They won't fit separately but will together, as long as you also have the ancillaries like hinges.

But he's right!
It will cost 9999 US$ to get it on its original condition at a competent mechanic, plus 1$ to buy the brat racer bobber basis. It's worth 10000$.

It may not be literally "on the street" but I take a peek at every K bike that comes up on ebay as well as on the local Craig's List and there do seem to be a fair amount of kafe'd ones that actually get completed.
As to whether or not they're worth the silly prices that some people ask for them, that's a whole 'nother issue.

Judging from the threads here and at Motobrick, there is a fair number of builders with aftermarket instrument issues that require a bit more than a hacksaw to correct.

My Big Block currently has only turn indicator & high beam LED, but no neutral light, no temperature, no fuel gauge, no tacho - no other permanent instruments. The functions I chose to use are simply wires tapped into the existing instrument's main plug, and tucked away behind the steering head out of harm's way.
For a speedometre I use my mobile phone with a commonly available GPS speedo app in a Ram mount.
I've watched and read about the difficulties people had/have with fitting those way kewl Motogadget speedos, and other brands, and attempting to reduce the loom to its essentials. I didn't bother. Works fine. I can ride twenty miles cross town or two hundred cross state, in Summer heat or Winter cold. I am 'forced' to be certain of fuel level, and of maintaining a level engine operating temperature. Against 'common knowledge', the alternator charges as intended, too.

Meh, I wouldn't take it personally. People who cafe bikes vary widely. While many do a good job of it there's also many who either give up halfway through or end up with hideous end products. And even then it boils down to people's personal tastes.
It's your bike, do what you want with it.

How on earth do you cope? Lol
Seems to me the comparatively small number of Ks getting 'cafe'd' (but over-represented on the internet - that's the show-off nature of the activity, I should know) spits out enough spare parts to keep a good legion of K diehards going. This'll take us happily into the second half of this century where we'll be riding through the demise of combustion engines, banned from cities and suburbs, off-grid. Ks will be amongst the last vehicles standing. That should be good enough for the old beasts.

Earlier a reference to the Crash Test Dummies in another post and now Rush TWB!?! Keep the references coming!
For those offended by the anti-cafe sentiments I offer up 'The Rodeo Song' by Showdown from the same general era in Canadian music. It has the nuances of the Ayn Rand inspired independence from Mr. Peart (author of Red Barchetta and notable GS rider) combined with, shall we say, rural Canadian gutteral wit. It also comes with a parental warning for those with more tender sensibilities.
