HI All,

I have a very poorly 1993 K1100LT that I bought 17 mths ago and has been in bits since.  New Oil/Water pump seals etc but the electrics are in clip ......  so I need some wise old BMW K bikers help if she is ever going to make it back onto the road...... BTW it does start! and I want to take her to Canada with me in the summer as I am moving to Alberta for two years with the British Army.

Just post up a question in the Electrical section of the forum and you'll probably be swarmed by response.
In the meantime, click on the Profile tab then click on the Signature tab when it appears and enter your moto's model and year. That will allow it to show up below all your posts to inform readers without their needing to backtrack for that information.

Good luck with achieving what you need in 3 months when 17 months haven't been enough! Sounds a bit like brexit ( ).
You might be better off just buying a bike once you're over there - and save the hassle of export/import. Several members over that way should be able to advise you on the availability of reasonably priced, running bikes...

I guess it all depends what is making your bike poorly...there is plenty of knowledge here on the forum to help you and a friendly bunch too.

Hey there welcome to the forum and soon to be, Canada!  What base will you be posted to in Alberta?

I get many of my parts from Motobins.  Can't beat the selection and price.  There are a couple of Motorrad dealers in Alberta I think but it isn't likely that you will need much after you get your bike sorted.  Good Luck!

I also think you'd be wise to reconsider shipping the bike over the Atlantic.  North America is full of K-bike bargains you could take advantage of.

I second what Born Again said about just buying another one when you get to this side of the pond.  For whatever reason, prices on K1100LTs are very low for the amount of bike you get and from what I know from several friends who have done so, importing a vehicle into Canada can involve a fair amount of administrative hassle and cost.  Even if the Brit military covers the transportation cost it still might be more hassle and cost than it's worth.

There's lot of great riding in Canada though (not to mention down in the US) so it'll be a great place to ride.

Her Majesty's Forces have some little gems in the system when it comes to overseas postings.  I would not be surprised to hear that if Mark is on a two year posting it may that one of the conditions is that you are able to take a vehicle with you amongst other things.  The Kanadians do drive on the korrect side of the road, don't they?  Being a member of the Commonwealth, and all that.  

Then again you would be surprised what comes out the back of returning aircraft from overseas exercises.  One example that comes to mind is a (K)Z1000 California Highway Patrol motorcycle at a certain airbase near me.  The gentleman concerned has since retired and his son in law has it.  

Then I heard about a GSD that went to the sandpit and came back home with its owner.

My point was that even with free transpo that Canadian bureaucracy related to vehicle importation might make it more trouble than it's worth when K1100LT's can be had for pretty low prices these days.

What? And make American tourists (those without a DUI/DWI) swap sides! Canadians drive on the same side of the road as the country they got their cars from. Now that they make their own cars, still from the country they got them from, they might as well keep driving on that side because the Mexicans do, too. The only country in the Americas, north & south (and I don't mean places like Michigan and Mississippi) is, oddly, Gayana.

I'm ambidextrous when it comes to what side of the road works best, so I get it. But strangely when I try to eat with the fork held in my left hand I stab myself in the forehead.

In BC, Canada they generally drive on the right side of the road but BC drivers have been known to wander.

Oh yes, one of those strange American habits.  Use both hands to cut cut up your meal and then use the fork in the right hand to shovel food into your mouth.  

Us civilised chaps from the Continent and the Commonwealth manage to feed ourselves with the fork in the left left hand and knife in the right.  Manners and all that.  

Wasn't that habit the one which gave away American agents in Europe in WW2?  Some would call it a lack of kulture.

You've got it wrong. Most, and I say only most, Yanks swap their knife and fork between hands after cutting. It's an amusing little ritual. I only use my right hand as a stabber and hold the knife in my left hand, never swapping. Quite different from the locals.

To keep this thread relevant to the forum, shouldn’t that be K nife?
