I don't see why one wouldn't just re-purpose a BMW switch.
If you want a momentary switch then you could re-purpose an ABS switch. Or a windscreen switch if you want a 3-way momentary switch.
Note also that you can swap the graphic symbols on the switches. For my garage door opener I used the insert from a windscreen switch because it has a helmet with up and down arrows in front of it.

Also, Skylink brand universal remotes are 12V so can use the bike to power them and not have to worry about a battery for the garage remote. (Some other garage remotes also use 12V batteries too.)
And if you want to be really fancy you can also add LEDs in the BMW switches to make them easy to find at night.
