Hello to all, very happy to have just picked up a 1993 k1100 LT. I have no experience working on bikes whatsoever all though I have basic knowledge of how they work. I have previously worked on cars, mostly bmw's. The bike I purchased is in pieces and I will try to get her running during the winter. I am here to learn as much as possible in order to be able to build the cafe racer vision I have for this bike. Any links, books or other information that you would deem useful to me would be much appreciated. I have already obtained repair manuals and started labeling and grouping different parts I have identified but I have a long way to go, any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Marc

WelKome.

With some car wrenching experience you'll be fine. Very early in my K ownership I learned that a K bike is just a car on two wheels.

Thank you for the quick reply Duck, I am very excited to get wrenching. Would you know of any books or online resources (I have the BMW service manual but I was thinking of getting the Clymer's manual too) that explain the bike's workings? I have many unidentified parts and wish there was a way for me to fully understand every system and part on this bike. I am extremely eager to learn every weird thing about this bike!

With the exception of the suspension and steering it pretty much is just like a car.

Getting a Clymer isn't a bad idea, especially since there is no Haynes that covers K1100s.  The only issue with it is that the 1100s were added later so a lot of the info for them is in the back of the Clymer so you need to do some flipping back and forth.

My advice is to just dig in and get to it.  If you have trouble identifying parts then post up pictures of them here and there's many of us here that can help you identify them.

WelKome Marc!  Beautiful city you live in - I had a great time there at the end of August (but not on my K100).  These bikes are incredibly well documented and for the most part really straight forward to work on.  Share your questions and we'll share some answers
