Hi Gents
Have taken the clutch, plate and basket out to change clutch plate
While staring at it, i grabbed the FD? thing that the clutch basket bolts to
and was able to push it in and out of the motor about 5 to 6 miilametres, is this normal
to have play there? If there is, I might as well keep going in further in for repairs
as have gone this far

That's OK when the clutch carrier bolts up all the slack should go away. There may be a slight movement.

The clutch plate, disc and pressure plate (basket you mention?) are bolted to the output shaft, and as Rick says, will have some movement which goes away once the compression ring and hex nut are tightened down (and a new o-ring is used). Keep in mind that the end of the output shaft uses a shim of varying thickness. See this parts diagramme. It's number 19 in this illustration from ETK. Also, helps us if you include in your 'signature' just which model you're asking the question about.
