Hello All. I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Dave from Pennsylvania, USA. I'm a brand new member to this forum and am looking forward to learning all I can about a K100rs that I purchased a month or so ago. So far I've had only minor issues, most of which I was able to sort out. There are a couple of things that I plan on researching here in the forum and hopefully I'll be able to contribute a bit as well. Thank you all in advance and have a great day.

Thank you all for the kind welcome. I've owned many bikes in my lifetime, probably approaching 25 or so. This is my first BMW and I'm eager to get started tinkering with it. 

I'm about to search the forum for a bit of info but perhaps someone could guide me a bit. A few weeks after purchasing I've been noticing a small drip of oil beneath the bike. Upon close inspection I noticed that there was a repair made to the case that houses the oil filter and sight glass and it's now leaking and I wish to replace the case (kicking myself for not noticing this before the purchase). I've found a few on line but I want to be certain of the fitment but cannot seem to locate a part number to cross reference. I've searched a few sights online that have microfische diagrams of the engine but none call out that part nor the gasket that fits between it and the engine block. 

My questions are...
What is the name for this case? I've seen it referred to as "sump case", "lower engine crank case", "oil sump housing", etc. but I'm still uncertain of the official name, so it makes it difficult to do an accurate search. 

I plan on breaking the bike down over the winter for a thorough servicing, including spline service, a clutch and cable replacement, every seal, gasket, and bearing that I can get my hands on, etc., and would like to track down as many of the parts as possible before hand. 

There are a lot of parts suppliers out there. Could someone guide me to a good, reliable, supplier? US based would be best for me but I'm willing to deal with anyone reliable.

Welcome from another new member.

That case is the oil pan.

As far as parts. I just made a list of a few items and ordered them from my local BMW dealer. He said most of the parts need to come from Germany.

I get what I can on eBay, and the rest from MaxBMW in New Hampshire.  Their site has parts fiche and easy ordering.  Most parts for Klassic K bikes will take about two weeks for delivery.

I was in error when I said it was the oil pan after rereading your post.

i would call it the sump but the fiche does not show that as an orderable part. The closest you can go is to order a complete short block.

I think your best best is to find a good used one either separately or as part of a broken engine.

I'm also not sure what it's officially called, but the top of that part supports the output shaft. It would be line bored along with the bottom of the block while mated together, which is why it would not be available as a separate part.

The purists would say that you should only replace the two parts as a machined together pair.

The practical people would say "let's put them together and see how they line up".

Depending on the nature of the leak and repair, it might be feasible to get someone with the appropriate skills and equipment to do a better repair with the whole thing disassembled. As with any welding of machined parts, care needs to be taken to ensure no heat distortion occurs. It would be a pity to have a nice, oil tight repair of the problem with the part then not mating properly with its partner.

Indian036, I believe I understand what you're saying but correct me if I'm wrong. So, the engine block and sump housing (for lack of an official name) are mated together, unfinished. Then the hole for the shaft is bored while together to insure proper alignment. That makes sense and I see why it isn't called out as a separate part. As far as BMW is concerned, the sump housing and the engine block, are one unit. 

I believe that I'd fall into the category of "practical" so I'm going to go ahead and buy one of the parts available on eBay and see if it lines up. The worst case scenario would be that it doesn't and I'd just have to do a better patch job than the previous owner. Which shouldn't be too difficult with the part off the bike.

Something that I found out (here on the forum) is that there is no gasket used between the parts. There is a sealer that BMW recommends for that but the name and part no. escapes me at the moment.

I don’t have the specific knowledge to say it’s definitely the case, but line boring of mated parts like that is a standard manufacturing procedure in many machines, so I’d be extremely surprised if that wasn’t the case. 

That also explains the non-use of a gasket, as perfect alignment would easily be disturbed by a slight difference in gasket thickness or compressibility on installation. 
BMW will doubtless specify a particular sealing product with their brand on it, but it’s a common enough situation that any decent automotive parts store will have a suitable product by a reputable maker.

A&S BMW has no tax and free shipping on all orders. That's where I get parts.

If I were going to replace the oil sump I would just use some Permatex gasket sealant.

Welkom Dave,  

With a name like that you'll do just fine.   Cool 

I just refer to it as the sump and the confusion maybe with R series bikes which have a gasket between the sump and block.  If you drop the sump to change the filter, you can also clean out the grunge, etc sitting in the sump.  

Since you are in the U S, then EME in Colorado are a good source for all things electric.  They have a range of other parts, including filters and their own brand name stuff as well as OEM.  It all helps if you are on a budget.

Hi all. Name is Rui and I live in Ireland. Bought a 1985 k100 that has been parked up for more then 8 years and as you can all guess I'm going to need a lot of tuition.
I'm mechanically/ electrically minded and love old challenges, but it's great to have the backup of experienced k100 veterans.
