Hello Riders!

I recently picked up my first BMW and thought I'd join a forum or 2 to get to know other riders and more about my 86 K100RT.

I picked up a used instrument cluster off ebay. On the current one the paint is cracked on the speedo side, the gear indicator does not work on the tach side and not sure if other indicators may be bad,  so this will look and function better.

I'd like to change  the handlebars. I'm 6'2" and am reaching over and down to get the bars so I'd like to change these or get some riser/extenders. What have you found works for you?

On my Titan I had 16" ape-hangers which were just right  for that style of bike.  I don't want to put apes on this but would like about 4" up and 3-4" back for an upright ride.

Looking for  suggestions on how to reduce the wind noise coming over the top of the windshield.  I'm looking over the top of it as I ride and all the compressed wind hits my helmet and it's extremely annoying and on long trips would be fatiguing. I have a full face modular helmet with Bluetooth but not listening to that until I get this handled.

I'm getting gear together to do some cycle camping  this summer. I'd like to spend some time in the remote areas of Eastern Oregon.

And looking for different rides to go on around the state. I'm about 90 minutes from the coast and will be going over there plenty this year.

Mark

Welkom Mark.

A nice part of the world where you are.

A taller screen might be the first option and adjusting the bars upwards/add bar risers might be a start.  Others with more experience in those area will be along soon to provide advice.

Dave.

Welcome! It will take a few more posts before you can post photos here. When you can, post some photos of the bike and the handle bars. The RT/LT models had bars with pretty good setback and rise. Not Apehangers, but enough for anyone to ride comfortably upright.

Your windshield is puzzling, I'm 6'1" and have a K75RT which has the same fairing and windshield. I can just see over the top of mine, and there is hardly any wind noise and buffeting with my modular helmet. Again, some photos will help figure out what you are dealing with so we can make suggestions.

My experience leads me to believe that unless the previous owner modified it, your bike should be able to carry you all day in comfort as it came from the factory. Are you sure you don't have a K100RS? You complaints sound more like what RS owners say about their bikes.

Thank you Dave. Yes there's so much to see here and now I'm going to go see it.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

Once I can posts pictures I'll add them here if I can.
It is an RT with the bigger windscreen on it.

I look forward to those comfortable all day rides on this bike and many shorter ones.

Hi Mark,

You won't regret getting a higher windscreen if the wind noise bothers you.

It didn't bother me when I got back to riding, but does now since I've got tinnitus (ringing in ears)

You could buy one or make one. I made one with a sheet of polycarb. It's not hard but it's on my "To Do" list to make another one. You pretty much want a temperature gun to make sure you don't overheat it before bending. This thread reminds me I probably want to get bar risers too.

Enjoy the ride.

I went the other way and run a low wind screen (summer/good weather) to put my helmet in clean air. The tall wind screen puts a good deal of stress on fairing mounts at speed or heavy cross wind. May is suggest rolling the bars up a bit and adjusting brake and clutch levers to comfortable angles, I've found a small adjustment can do wonders for neck and shoulder comfort.

+1 on the Caveman. Lever angle is critical for long distance comfort. I have also made cut down shields to put the turbulence on my chest and make summer riding a lot cooler.

I think I found the solution for the wind buffeting my head and helmet over the top of the windshield.

The Laminar Lip seems to be the solution from what I read on the testimonials at the site.

I ordered one and will let you know how it works out.
