I'm Rob and I live halfway along the Thames in Oxfordshire, UK. I ride a Fjord Grey and Canyon Red 1998 K1100LTSE with 40,000 or so miles on clock. I have had the bike for around 4 years and always thought the K100-forum was bike specific but now I learn there's a welcome for the 1100cc brothers and sisters. So, hello!

Hi Rob. I get a bit confused on here myself mate but the information in the searches is invaluable. I guess I need to learn a bit more.

I think for me the K100 forum will be a useful source for addressing the principles of the mechanics etc which can be invaluable in diagnosing a fault. When it comes to the nitty-gritty of model-specific peculiarities, I'll have other sources as well as the old hard-won, self-taught lessons. They say knowledge is power, and I'm sure I'll pick up some nuggets here! Nice to see some familiar names too Smile

Hi Rob,

Welcome.

I am just up the road from you near Daventry. If you are a fully paid up of the BMW Club (UK), then don't forget we have all manner of specialist BMW tools and literature for hire to help maintain your K1100

I have a 1994 K1100LT SE that I have just got back on the road (not used since 2013).

Welkome Rob, there's plenty of bigger and smaller siblings (aka K1100 & K75) happily residing on this forum.

Cheers

Hi Olaf,

You never know, we may just do that!

Now that the K1100 is back on the road (o.k. I need to sort out the non-functioning electric screen) I just need to swap out the gearbox in the R1150RT for a replacement I have on the bench. The original one has stripped its input splines twice in less than 30,000 miles.

Then a couple of airheads to get to get to grips with (my R100RS bought new in 1978, and a 1979 R80/7).

Mine refused to work one day ('98 K1100LT). The switch was fine and I traced it to the 2 relays mounted behind the inner fairing panel. I just removed the relays (small grey boxes) cleaned up the contacts and it worked fine. Worth a try if the motor, mechanism and switch all check out OK.

Hi Rob,

I was given a spare (used) relay when I ordered a service kit from Motorworks. This was last week-end at the Airhead Fellowship meeting in Lincoln. Motorworks had an offer of free postage for orders taken at the event.

I have worked on the screen, but it was years ago, so it's not surprising to find it not working.
