Because my 86 K100 stands seem to be bent up I took advice and procured a K1100 stand.

As seen in the photos (K1100 on top) the sidestand clutch retract mechanisms are different and I did not receive the connector rod for the K1100 stand.

What do people suggest to have the K1100 stand with the retract mechanism working.  Do I just swap over the entire retract mechanism off the K100 stand?

Just swap the mechanisms as seen on your picture, I swapped the side stand too. I have a mainstand from a K1100 on a K75.
If I pull the clutch the sidestand goes up, as it should.

Cheers

OTOH you can always junk the retraction mechanism. One more thing to go wrong and one more thing to make the clutch heavy.

You can do a direct swap. The K1100 retraction mechanism actuates a switch; the k100 mechanism physically links the clutch to the sidestand. Both are safety mechanisms and defeating them increases risk of an upset. Although you will hear opinions from both sides (I prefer the retraction mechanism), the decision is yours based on your appetite for risk.

My K100LT has the retract mechanism. Its useful and when you pull on the clutch you immediately know its down and can either kick it up or let the clutch lever do it. I was never tempted to disconnect it.

My K1100LT has the switch which is just as useful.

My K100RT had the auto retract which I disconnected and yes I have occasionally taken off with the side stand down.

Thanks all for the info.

Robmack that explains a lot.  I thought I was missing parts but you saying it actuates a switch makes it obvious now!

I like the auto retract on pulling the clutch and will try and keep it but do realise it does "load up" the clutch cable.

It only loads the clutch cable when the stand is down.  Proper adjustment and lubrication minimizes the loading.

I love the mechanical retract, and prefer it's simplicity over the potentially troublesome switch. As seven five stated as soon as you feel resistance flick it up with your foot. When I first got mine, I used to love people reactions when they warned me that my stand was down. Only to be surprised as the stand popped up as I went to engage gear.
I very rarely let it self retract, it's pretty well automatic to flick it up.
Regards Martin.
