I have a couple of stripped threads in the bearing caps for the valve cover bolts
To insert the helicoil should I remove the bearing cap or do the job in situ ???
Thanks
Mike

You can do the job in situ - just pack a piece of cloth around the area to catch the swarf and be assiduous in cleaning it out afterwards. The other possibility if you prefer to remove the cap is to rotate the engine until that cylinder is at TDC on the firing stroke i.e. there's no pressure on the cam cap. The advantage of removing the cap is that it will be easier to get the drill in the correct position to clean the old threads. I think I'd go this route.

Also: be very, very, very careful because the cam caps are cast from mouldy cheese and the threaded area will break up at the slightest provocation.

Thanks Dai & Rick, job done, removed caps and did it on the bench. Don't think it took much longer than doing it on the bike really
