Hey fellas, just picked up a 1985 K100 for free. Just wanting to tear it to pieces and get the rebuild started. But I had to come here to get some good ideas and lines on parts. I’m a helicopter mechanic/Flight Engineer/Medevac aircrew member for the US Army. I’m from the Deep South in the United States where we are always tinkering and driving too fast.

Not a bad price...regardless of condition and sounds like a great project. As a helicopter mechanic, don't read too much into the "flying brick" handle associated with these bikes - probably has the same aerodynamics as a 1950s helicopter but you'll struggle to get her more than a few inches off the ground for more than a few seconds.

Get lots of pics before you start the tear down...before & after is always satisfying viewing. It is also useful to take pics as you dismantle, it is amazing how troublesome the jigsaw can become on reassembly - even after just a few weeks (or days for some of us).

I can only concur with Born Again Eccentric, having just completed and 8 month  gearbox and everything west of it ...removal and restoration.
Take pic's of all the tricky bits, take your time, replace any nasty hard rubber bits and re-grease any greasy bits and you should be good

Hopefully you won't ever get her airborne, but God, she's good to ride ;-)
