46 63 2 307 640 RS mirror glass is about $45 in the US. True, it's backordered indefinitely to der Vaterland, but available at one of my local dealers by chance. 

Damn that .78 cent OZ dollar and the tyranny of distance!

It seems to claim that it works on both RT and RS mirrors but I'm not so sure since RT and RS mirrors have a slightly different shape.

You're correct, Mr. Duck.  I bought a couple of the mirrors from the Fatherland myself.   They were very reasonably priced, I now see....

It is possible to pickup a convex side mirror from a car/truck wrecker and have it recut to fit. I can't remember where I saw it but it was successful.

Motorworks seem to have RS glass for £54 and LT/RT glass for £55.01. (thats about $100AUS or $78US)
James Sherlock quote £60.48 for RS and £52.98 for LT/RT, but say they don't have the RS ones in stock.

All those prices include VAT (at 20%) so you lucky overseas folks can get them about £10 ($18AUS / $14) cheaper, but pay a little more postage perhaps. Evenso, you could get 2 for the price that the munich people are charging!

If I'd known they were that expensive, I'd have looked up "How to remove mirror glass" on this forum before trying to work out how to do it myself and breaking 2 of them in the process. The slam down on the carpet mode though does work very well and was used to successfully remove the glass safely from 2 of my spare pods.

The RT and RS mirror glass is nearly indistinguishable from each other.  The only difference I can see is in the mounting.  If you can somehow separate the RT glass from the mount you can have a mirror glass or your RS for a mere $86.12US(until the next bi-weekly 10% price increase).

I had a local art glass shop cut a mirror out of an auto side mirror for $20.  Took him about 15 minutes.  This guy used the machines in his shop that were for making glass table tops to cut and polish the edges.  He even put some sort of sealer on the edges to prevent water from getting to the silvering.  If the shop doesn't have a mirror to cut from you can pick one up at the auto wrecker for about $10 tops.

This mirror removal method may be on the forum somewhere already.

BAE, I just make 2 "grab handles/loops" out of a couple of reasonably large cable ties then slide one in from each side of the mirror until they are close to the centre and up against the ball, take a firm hold of the pod with one hand and grasp both loops in the other - then sharply pop the mirror off the ball. Note: make arrangement for the mirror to NOT fall onto the concrete floor and break.

I've used Charlie's cable tie method for removing the mirror glasses from their pods in the past but when I had a particularly tight one I actually smashed a glass when tugging so hard.

 So, what I do now, is remove the pivot ball, drill out the plastic insert and tap M5. 

It's also necessary to cut away a section of the 'reflector' to give access to the screw head with an Allen key.




I can now remove my mirrors without any hassle, I just undo the screw.......and I don't want to break another glass as they are getting difficult to find.

That works well on the RS but the RT/LT doesn't have the lenses in the mirror.

Dang Paul I feel your pain..

since the Charlie - cable tie method was proposed I have had some experience now with the rs type mirrors  rather than rt- lt alone

the rt - lt glass has a ridge of plastic support across the back of the glass orientated vertically   
but I seem to recall the rs type mirrors have a plastic support oriented horizontally  ....
so far that technique has worked successfully for me quite a few times .

sad to hear that the process hasn't worked for you . 
 in all honesty  there are some that are hard to remove in any circumstance

but if extreme resistance if felt before popping out .. I suggest that anybody attempting the cable tie method first squirts the rear retaining ball with some form of lubricant to the ball area behind the glass ...with one of those small extension tubes off the lubricant to get in there , followed by a good push and shove movement of the mirror in all directions so that the plastic retainer and ball  with the glass move fluidly  ...before attempting the pull method ...or the slam the face down method ..
I fear that some pods have been repainted , which could add to the resistance of the pop out characteristic of the plastic retainer off the ball , (not counting the hardening of the plastic backing ant retainer ,,,over the years)

Was talking to a guy from CA the other day who is restoring his K100RS4V after an idiot in a car pushed him into a telephone pole at speed. 

He said he just went to a normal glass shop and had them cut him some regular mirror glass in the shape of the RS mirror and then glued that to the plastic holder plate.

It doesn't have the slightly convex shape of factory glass but how important is that anyhow?  I don't know about you guys but I don't trust my mirrors and always do a shoulder check when it matters.

+1 on the Duck's recommendation.   As far as I can tell, almost every passenger side automobile side mirror has a convex curve similar if not identical to that on the BMW mirrors.  Go to a junk yard and there are lots of them for as little as $10.  Then take it to a shop that makes glass table tops where they have the machines to cut and polish the edges.  Seal the edge with epoxy and you're good to go.  Shouldn't cost more than $40.  When I did mine, the glass shop had an old auto mirror to cut and only charged me $20 for everything.

About the ball on the RS mirrors.  Isn't it supposed to stay attached to the back of the mirror?  On my K100RS the mirrors have a stud with a groove that is gripped by spring wires.  Older mirror pods appear to have the wires as part of the pod, where later model mirrors have that paper clip looking thing that retains the glass.  I don't think that ball is supposed to come out of it's socket.

I got both of  mine out unbroken simply by spraying some CRC with supplied tube behind the mirror towards the centre mounting....  and then using a Ford (omg it's a car tool) door trim removal tool (very thin flexible steel with suitable notches and cheap and available at auto shops  ) to get it behind the centre of the mirror and then with light pressure just lever the mirror out. Guy who painted the mirror housings said he had never heard of this method and he had broken heaps of mirrors previously trying to get them out with other methods
