Hi there, my name is jon and i live in deepest Dorset and yesterday(20th july) i found myself the proud owner of a BMW, now i've never held them in high regard, and did care much for the quirkyness and odd styling, but have warmed to the K100RS in its early guise, and ended up buying one, why, because I think at the age of 48 and 31 years of japs and the odd italian I needed a change.
Back in february i bought an early Triumph trophy 900 triple and was to say the least was pretty excited, however i soon came to realise that it was going to be difficult to get on with, it wallowed around and despite uprating the suspension, never got any better along with the top heavy feel and awkward riding position which only made sense at speeds over 70mph, despite the stonking motor, i could never get it to its full potential, and so, with a great feeling of disappointment, it had to go, so i needed something else, fast!
Dont normally do internet auction sites as it can be a bit of a gamble but this K100RS looked handsome all in black and the fact that it had only 9000 miles on the clock and was the plaything of a rich Kuwaiti playboy, who soon got bored with it and parked it up for many years, and thats where it stayed until a short while ago when it was bought by a brit soldier and brought it back to blighty where it was re registered,(A reg, that is the 1964 A reg!), anyway, i didnt know what to expect but after a few miles, was feeling quite at home, and have now realised it was just what i was looking for!
The only problem is that i know nothing about them and so have loads of questions to ask, for instance wheres the steering lock?
soory for rambling on a bit but thats just me i guess!!

Hi jonno, welcome to to the old folks home. You will find that K's get under your skin and are hard to part with. I keep threatening to buy something more modern but can't see me letting the 'brick' go.
Plenty of info about them on the internet. Check out the links on the Home page. You can also download a copy of the Haynes manual, among other stuff, in the Downloads section. Bert (Crazy Frog) has put a lot into the site.

Ah...the old folks' home. Good one Comberjohn Hi and help! Icon_biggrin

Welcome Jonno to the circus.

The steering lock is on the steering head on the left side.
Put the bike on the centre stand (please note the correct spelling of centre Hi and help! Icon_smile ), turn the forks to the right and you will see the steering lock on the left side of the steering head.
I've never used mine, so I don't even know if it works.

As Comberjohn said, download the manual and bring on the questions!

Bert is our hero!

Steering lock is a bit fiddly to use. I thought mine was broken at first. You must push the key into the lock as you turn it. Hard to describe exactly but easy when you get the hang of it. Hi and help! Icon_cool

Thank you for the enthusiastic replies!
After a few days ownership, i firmly feel that it suits my riding style well, seems to fit like my favourite old slippers, however a few things have invaded my enjoyment, not least of which is the stiff throttle and warped front disc which need sorting as soon as i have the funds available, oh and a slight oil drip from the front, a mechanical seal i believe, had a cx500 with the same problem!

Hi Jon and welcome and if the bike fits then thats the best you can hope for.
As for the oil leak best start a new thread and also peruse the waterpump seal threads.

CX mechanical seals are just so much fun.
Haven't done one on the BM but from what I've seen it's scarily familiar but a lot easier to get to.

Hi and welcome Jonno
I have an 87 K100-RS and a CX rattish/bitsa bike
I know lots of guys with CX;s who have, or moved to, beemers
K types especially
(Its a shaft thing)
Done plenty of mech seal on CX's and bolloxed up me first one on a beemer but
they are much quicker and easier to do once you know how to avoid the silly mistakes.

My RS was my first Beemer and I love it !
Its 'only done' 76 thou

Yep, it is the shaft thing Smile I can't bring my self to play with chains again. The CX did it for me also, so my current pride an joys are the K100RS and the 1976 K1 Goldwing Smile
