I'm considering swapping everything from one K bike onto another. Basically the project bike has come the engine starts however this needs a lot of work all over.

Now I've got an rs that's an 89 at the moment I'm looking for reasons to justify me having 3 bikes. Can't see it but can see me storing a k. So I'm wondering if it would be possible to switch everything bar the fairing (that would be sold), onto the 1984.

The reason for swapping is I've already got an 84 bike and I know for definite that everything is the same on both bikes; no modifications not in the slightest.

That way I could store the 84 engine on the 89 frame to sort out at a later date. However has anyone done similar before and how much time did it take ?

I know that on K's it's easier to remove the frame from the engine instead of the opposite way around.

In 1985 a number of changes took place. Same include, different tank, side panels, ducktail, seat, footpegs, brackets for footpegs. The Fuel level sender unit was different  and the instruments had a 4/7 litre fuel left light to a single warning lamp. Not sure about all the wiring.
Good luck.

there are some silly things that changed on the swap from 84 to 86 and on

like the gpi cable connections  at the right hand sidecover , likewise some others as well

but shouldn't be too much of an issue ,  just swap the sensor from the old bike , clean them up and replace onto the new engine transmission ???

renew seals and rebuild of those bits could mean they they give good service life into the future ...

you may also get the benefit of the newer (metallurgy ) valve seats etc inside the newer motor with the swap over

good luck

Wiring loom is different because of the changes to the fuel level sender.

Slightly off topic (and no help to you whatsoever, sorry) but, well, have you found yourself considering having two bikes the 'same'. One MOT, one lot of insurance, y'know...

Hey you can only ride one at once, I'm only sat here thinking...

I'll get me coat.

One of the things to watch is the fuel tank rear mountings - the lugs on the frame changed at some point so you have to match 'early tank-early frame' etc.

Clocks changed too.......

List is endless. I have 84RT and 92LT and don't see much interchangeability on electrical items apart from bulbs. I think you will need to look at a lot of sensors and switches from the engine being changed back to the earlier ones to match the earlier loom. A useful tool would be to look at Motorworks website and see when you click on an item what year each one is good for. They give quite good indications.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I've got a working tank and two spare looms for an 84. The main reason for the switch over is I know the fuel injectors on the 89 are in great condition; however on tthe 84 they look rather iffy. Fairings won't be a concern as they aren't going onto the 84. They will be sold off or kept for a later date to be sold off. The 89 would then be broken down into spare parts.

Note I won't be doing anything to the 89 bike just yet as it's my daily hack whilst I sort the 3rd K out.

Oh and to the comment yes I have thought about it before one mot one tax etc. Just wondering what would happen if stopped and they decide to check the frame numbers. Unlikely but you never know.

This is the 89 that would be used.

Injectors and rail are an easy change. No way does that warrant an engine change.

It's one thing I've never messed with and the worry is I'd screw it up. The red K is going to be a cafe racer with homage to ww1 and 2 fighter pilots without altering the frame.

All you need to hand are new seals, but also get a replacement rail that will pop in. If you have spare injectors its a fairly quick change over.

What a Face Go hang your head in shame for suggesting such a heinous act!!

TheJoker wrote:Oh and to the comment yes I have thought about it before one mot one tax etc. Just wondering what would happen if stopped and they decide to check the frame numbers. Unlikely but you never know.

I have noticed that the MoT tester specifically checks the VIN stamped on the frame with the MoT docs on-line to ensure that the MoT is recorded for that bike frame and registration number.

If you had two similar looking bikes and just swapped the number plate over onto the one you were riding (to save MoT cost, insurance etc.), as far as traffic cameras and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) goes, you would be OK as they only check that the number plate is associated with a valid MoT and tax. However, if you were stopped by the police (for any reason), if you are on the wrong bike you are in for a world of pain (and cost). The police would do you for no insurance (seize the bike and you pay storage costs until recovered and pay £150 for the pleasure of them looking after it as well as 6 points on your licence) and no MoT. Big fines on top of storage charges! They would also do you for using the wrong registration plates. Worse still (and more likely), if you had an accident then, on the wrong bike, you would be clobbered with all of the above police stuff and, without insurance, would be well an truly stuffed - even if the accident wasn't your fault.

You never know when you might be about to regret it!

£29 for MoT and £85 for road tax per bike is worth if for the peace of mind and multibike insurance is not much more than insuring a single bike (much cheaper than insuring two bikes separately on their own policies).

£0 for MOT and £22 road tax for my K100RT.
£0 for MOT and £70 road tax for my K1100LT.

Brexit might not be so bad after all.

I knew a guy years back had 2 cars on the one reg plate. Funny, apart from being same colour they had the same chassis and engine nos as well. Had to do with a 35% tax and more on them.

As for the near miss, do you ever get the feeling of invisibility?

I am with BAE on this one, It is ar$eholes who break the law to save a few quid that put costs up for everyone else, I feel sorry for the person that you get involved in an accident with as they will have a crap job trying to get their pride and joy repaired after meeting you on the road.
Put your hand in your pocket and do things properly, you would soon moan if an uninsured driver hit you. Evil or Very Mad

And thanks for warning us of what you intend to do, and on the web too!
I have an mate who is a copper in the Stoke area and he will make sure that any K100s that are spotted on the road will be checked. He thought that your posts are an interesting read.

Just to inform you it's never cool to bring police into anything bike related. That doesn't matter who you are or social standing. Police aren't much use anyway regarding bike crime and I would trust a baseball bat or rock thrown at a bike thief whilst riding; more than I would of police doing there job and catching them.

I'll admit I'm curious by it however I've already got two k100's on the road and both of them have tax, mot and insurance. If I had gone down the route that the previous person mentioned I would have done it with them two.

This was 11th november 2016 below when a car turned right in front of me. No one has to warn me the dangers of being invisible on the road. Personally I know the pain that comes along with it.
