Hola.

Engine back together and looking forward to starting Alda up.  However, before I do that, I thought I'd replace the rubber bushes on the bolts that attach the engine side covers.  There are 22 of them.  The old bushes are not easy to get over the shoulders.  Other than K-Y, any tricks that make this process easier?

Edit:  Never mind.  I'm just going to tear them off with pliers.  No reason to keep them intact.

yep that's the way ...or cut through them with a good set of sidecutters   they do go hard and almost impossible to get over the shoulders

You could try soaking in ATF fluid, might soften them. A few guys have suggested it's use to recover old seals.

Why are you wanting to remove and replace them? Are they leaking? If so, give them a good old fashioned boil up. Add a small amount of regular detergent to a pot of water and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes to restore to original shape and softness. If they still leak oil, remove from screw and install a stainless washer behind them. This has the effect of increasing the pressure fit of the rubber grommet to the cover.

The only problem with that is that you also increase the pressure on the threads in the camcaps. They're marginal as it is.

aye ...indeed

the seal around the engine cases proper is probably also gone hard ...

remember wiping leaking stuff off till I changed both ...worth it for a neat and clean bike

Oi! I've got a '62 TR6 in the garage at the moment and it's hardly dripped at all in the last six weeks it's been here. Yes, it does have a full oil tank!

Quite right Dai, but we're only talking a few Nm, 7 or 8 from memory, and hardly enough to cause any stress. I have done this recently on my K1 as I has persistent leaks and it sorted the problem nicely. Or was it the cook up of the rubbers? Dunno as I did both options at there same time.

Someone did it on LFB and split No1 exhaust cam cap. There's a couple of threads left (and I mean two); the OEM bolts won't go in because they have a threadless lead on them. I cut a stainless M6 allen bolt to the correct length and fitted a new rubber. The end of the bolt was given a dose of Loctite and the underside of the rubber was treated to some Threebond. The bolt was wound in until I could just feel it start to tighten, then all was left to go off. Thirty thousand miles later, still no problems.

The biggest 'what-if' nightmare was finding the remains of the cam cap threads in the bottom of the cam cover.
