Hi All, can someone suggest a good connection for a voltmeter thought about headlight etc but would that give a reduced reading, thanks in advance.

It would not give a reduced reading at all. The voltage is pretty much the same all over the system.
I would suggest plus from side lamp bulb as that is easy to get to and negative to earth.
Use a cheap ebay digital one from China, they work just fine.

Generally, Australian ones from 1985 don't have always-on parking lights (side lamps in British speak). The meter would only work when the lights are on. 
One of the other suggestions from the thread Laitch referenced would be needed in this case. BobT's comment is, of course, valid for later and/or other places.

I have ones very similar to the top one but it is hard wired in. 
No Euro model bikes have permanent lights on from that era either. Just thought that as most people ride with lights on it was an easy way to do it. The OP was talking about wiring it to the dip beam so I assume that he rides with lights on anyway.
