Hi guys,

I am in the process of preparing my 1987 K100 RT work a weekend trip, and it seems I have managed to break something:(.
I decided to pull the instrument cluster, to fix the trip odometer (the reset screw popped out, as the metal retainer fell away). While at it, I decided to change all bulbs in the cluster to LED. My original plan was to make a short tutorial about it, but.... I guess I should leave the to the pros:x

When I tried to resemble the unit, I noticed that the speedo needle has fallen below 0 km/h. I have no idea what/where I have messed up (was trying to be very careful...) Now when I reconnect the unit, the speed does not work.

Pleas help:)SPEEDO NEEDLE DROPPED BELOW 0 - HELP NEEDED PLEASE:) Speedo10

Three things:

1. Did you take the speedo off the main panel? If so, check that all eleven pins have re-engaged correctly. It's easy to get one or two not lined up correctly.
2. If you wind the needle round by hand, does it return slowly or very quickly? If it returns slowly then it might not be broken.
3. If you grip the centre of the needle (the round part) and pull gently upwards, does the needle come off? If so, line it up carefully with the 0 (zero) and push it back on. You may not get an exact reading as it's a spline fitting.

Hi Dai,

1) Yes, the speedo was disconnected, and when I reconnected I made sure that all the pins are properly aligned, and I have cleaned them with contact spray.
2)The needle was rotating back slowly, just as the rev counter needle, so I presumed it was ok:)
3)That solved the problem:)! The only issue was, that I had to use much more force as I was comfortable with (I tried that before, but gave up, as I thought I am going to tear something off)

So, the speedo is now working again, and the instrument panel has new LED bulbs inside.

Thanks again!!!

Yes, you do have to push harder than you'd think necessary. The spline is on a very thin shaft and the shaft will bend easily if you are pushing slightly off-centre. The needle itself can also go on at an angle, but as long as it isn't fouling the instrument face or the plexiglass, it isn't really a problem.

So, I have put everything back together, and the choke light does not work. I have checked the connectors, used the contact cleaner spray, switched the lightbulb from LED back to tungsten, switched the lightbulb holders...and nothing.
Any ideas what could be wrong? I will try tomorrow to test the copper contacts on the flexible plastic motherboard (have to get a multimeter) to see if I get the power there.

It was working before, and now after I have changed the bulbs to LED it doesn't work. No idea what could have gone south....

Need some of the forum Master Wizards to help:))
